Canine Aromatherapy by Earth Heart™
Earth Heart™ Aromatherapy for You and Your Dog

About Us
Earth Heart™ Inc. has a long-standing reputation for providing quality wellness products using pure essential oils and other plant-based ingredients. Products are developed by Vicki Rae Thorne, certified aromatherapist and master herbalist. Vicki founded Earth Heart in 1996 to help others learn how to use herbs and aromatherapy as an integral part of everyday health, offering products and classes to both professionals and families. She is a member of the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and the American Herbalist Guild.

Earth Heart’s focus shifted in 2000 when a kennel owner asked for help with calming dogs during new arrivals and feeding times. The dogs experienced a wide range of emotions from being anxious or angry, agitated or depressed…and they all missed their families. The product now known as Canine Calm was originally developed to diffuse in the kennel, and it worked from day one. Customers noticed that their dogs were calmer when they left the kennel, and didn’t fret so much when it was time to go back. This same kennel has been successfully using Canine Calm since the spring of 2000, and the aromatherapy mists were developed for customers who wanted a product to use at home or while traveling.

What Is Aromatherapy?

The simplest definition of aromatherapy is “healing with scent.”  Specifically, aromatherapy is the inhalation and topical application of pure essential oils from aromatic plants to restore or enhance health, beauty and well-being.

Essential oils are the volatile oils from the rind, flower, leaf, bark, root, or resin of aromatic plants that are released by steam distillation, cold expression or solvent extraction. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted before use on the body. It is important to note that fragrance oils (such as raspberry, peach or apple) are synthetic scents, and are not used in therapeutic aromatherapy.

Our Products
Our line of canine aromatherapy products offer unique scents you can use depending on your dog’s needs. Each product has been blended to insure safe and effective care with a pleasant scent. Here are the products we offer:

  • Canine Calm™ is soothing during unsettling times such as thunderstorms, holidays, fireworks, competitions, adoptions, travel, bath time, and clinic or kennel visits. The floral-citrus scent is a blend of pure essential oils that include lavender, bergamot, tangerine and geranium…plants that have traditionally been used for relaxation.
  • Guard Well™ is used to nurture a natural state of health during cold and flu season, after exposure to lawn or pool chemicals, or long-term use of medications. It contains pure essential oils of niaouli, ravensara and frankincense, which have historically been used for lung, liver and immune support.

  • Travel Calm™ can help quiet the restlessness and tummy upset experienced by some dogs during travel. Canine Calm is blended with ginger, which has traditionally been used in remedies for the stomach. Travel Calm can also be substituted for Canine Calm if you prefer an earthier scent.

How Can Aromatherapy Really Help My Dog?
Scientific studies originating in France during the early 1900s used dogs and horses as test subjects to determine the potential effects of essential oils on humans. Because the results of these veterinary case studies were so positive, the practice of both human and veterinary aromatherapy has continued to gain popularity. Documentation on the medicinal properties of essential oils includes antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiinflammatory, sedative, stimulating and regenerative effects.

When either inhaled or applied to the skin, essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. Scent itself is “memoristic,” which means an aroma can trigger a memory along with an emotional response. Because dogs love to smell things, aromatherapy is ideal for use with them.

How Are The Products Used?
Earth Heart™ mists are appropriately diluted for safe use, and application is simple. Mist your hands and massage the dog’s abdomen, or massage the dog’s outer ears in gentle upward strokes. Lightly mist behind your dog’s head, or mist a favorite bandana to tie around the dog’s neck. You can also mist around a room, inside the travel crate or car, or directly onto bedding. Be creative, but don’t spray the product into the dog’s face, mouth, eyes or ears.

Because of the “memoristic” nature of scent, you may want your initial use of the product to be at a non-stressful time. Lightly mist yourself, then hold or pet your dog to help associate the scent with a person of comfort and a relaxed moment. This also allows you to see how quickly the dog responds.

How Many “Mists” Are Effective?
For small, young or elder dogs, one or two mists may be appropriate, and for medium to large dogs it may be necessary to use four to six mists. In aromatherapy, and especially with a dog’s acute sense of smell, less is more.

Who Uses The Products?

Trainers love Canine Calm™ because it helps calm and focus the dogs quickly, so that other training tools are more effective. Kennels, clinics and groomers have found the dogs to be calmer and quieter during visits…and because their customers are picking up a calmer dog, it can mean less stress for the next visit.

Although the products were developed for dogs, people have used Canine Calm™ as a calming personal scent, and to relax after work or calm the children at bedtime. Guard Well™ has been used during cold and flu season both in the home and in the workplace. Customers have reported using Travel Calm™ successfully with their children, too. It is important to note that essential oils are not recommended for use with cats or birds.

What Do Customers Say About Earth Heart™ Aromatherapy Products?

Sinjun is a nearly 4 year old white collie who has noise issues...During fireworks and thunderstorms he paces, pants and drools constantly. I have tried different things to calm him but nothing has worked. We recently had a really loud storm with torrential rain. After the first clap of thunder, he started to panic. I sprayed Canine Calm on my hands and rubbed it into his ears and chest...he lay down beside me at the computer and proceeded to snooze through the whole storm.
Heather, Canada

The Travel Calm was wonderful!  The two greyhounds pretty much slept the entire way.  It didn't cause sleepiness, just calmed them so that they were not anxious and jittery.  They did not get sick on the trip either. I will use it on all our road trips.
Darlene Lawrence, Crystal Lake, IL

I use Guard Well religiously every day after my shower.  I spray my chest with two pumps, and have a natural cologne that keeps me healthy. I like the way it smells – it’s not overly strong, and doesn’t take your breath away like some products do when you smell them.  I’ve been using this product every day for over 3 years, and haven’t been sick since I started using it.
Ray W., Sugar Grove, IL
