Does It Really Matter What I Wash My Horse Blanket With?
Yes! Modern horse blankets combine several technologies to keep your horse healthy and comfortable. Each of these features needs CareTex Blanket Wash to maintain it at maximum performance. CareTex™ Blanket Wash was designed with each of these features in mind so that your horse blankets can be cleaned from dirt and soil— but not have these technologies lessened or destroyed altogether as with other washes. And because CareTex Blanket Wash leaves no residue it cannot irritate your horses skin.

What “Features” Does The Average Horse Blanket Have That Need Special Care?

A) On the outside is a tough but breathable nylon shell with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent). Any contamination, but especially detergent residue, on the outer surface makes the DWR ineffective so that water can cling and wet it out, which stops breathability. The underside of the nylon outer shell has a polyurethane coating or a porous Teflon laminate to provide waterproofness if the DWR fails. These also can absorb and pass water and loose breathability if they become contaminated.

B) A layer of insulation is often used in the middle of heavier blankets. It too must be clean and residue free. Oil and soap residue mat it down and cause it to absorb water, both of which increase heat loss. The insulation may be protected by another layer, separating it from a hydrophilic wicking layer. The wicking is intended to remove moisture from the horse and transport it to the edge of the blanket (away from the horse) so it can evaporate. Dirt and residue will slow the transport and drying functions of this fabric.

How Do I Use It?
Use 1/2 oz (3 capfuls). Follow blanket manufacturer’s instructions. Remove any heavy dirt before washing. Pre-treat heavy stains with CareTex Blanket Wash (full strength). For large blankets, we recommend you use a commercial washer (yes, it is worth that trip to the laundromat for this!). Select a “double rinse” cycle. For people, pet or stable laundry, use 1 full oz per machine load.

What If I Want To Handwash?
For hand washing, use 1/2 oz per 1 gallon of water. Soak 30 minutes. Agitate articles while soaking. Always look at the manufacturer’s washing instructions!
