Newmarket Joint Supplement Saves "Blue"
NewMarket Blue

from a Lifetime of the Blues
! By Sydney Hines

Since I was twelve years old, I wanted a grey thoroughbred mare, and 'Blue' was my dream horse. I had owned her for fifteen months, when tragedy struck. She stepped on a fencing nail in my round pen, while I was lunging her. Unfortunately, the nail penetrated a critical area of the foot; the navicular bone and the coffin joint region. Infection set in and we were referred to a nearby Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Blue had a 'Street Nail Procedure' performed. The surgeon went through the bottom of her foot to open up the navicular bursa to debride and flush the infection from her navicular bone and coffin joint area. This left her with a huge hole in her foot; a large window in her flexor tendon weakening it considerably, and permanent damage to her navicular bone and coffin joint. After spending eight weeks in the hospital, she was able to return home even though she was still basically walking on three legs. At the time, her surgeon recommended we start Adequan IM injections and a glucosamine supplement. We continued that treatment for the next year.

I could always gauge her comfort level by how far forward she would step with the injured foot. I'm of the opinion, the source of pain was from the damaged flexor tendon raking across the navicular bone. In June of 2001, Blue's doctor gave me a sample of an imported glucosamine supplement, Newmarket Joint Supplement, and suggested we give it a try. We started the product the next day. Unbelievably in five days, I saw a marked difference in her movement. I skipped the next monthly Adequan injection, and there was no decrease in her progress.

I've continued to use the product, "Newmarket Joint Supplement", on Blue, two and three year olds, show horses, and retirees. I was approached by the manufacturers of Newmarket Joint Supplement after they heard of my satisfaction with the product. They had minimal experience of the US market and were looking for an outlet stateside. I have since discovered that there are many, many different supplements and forms of oral supplementation.

However, if you get down to the actual details there are few scientific studies that have been performed; none that label oral supplements in horses and then assessing whether they make it to the joint to help repair or maintain cartilage. Most doses are too low, extrapolating from work in other species at least a 10g per day is needed for a clinically efficient dose.

NewMarket Ad PhotoSupplements other than glucosamine are not well absorbed and may even be broken down to be rendered ineffective by the gut. Further work may be needed but certainly results of glucosamine in other species make its use in horses a sensible option. Unlike the other products I've previously tried, I know I'm helping the horses' joints , and not just hoping, since I can see the difference. - Sydney Hines owner of H & H Supplements
