Are You an ACTIVE or REACTIVE Rider by Jimmy Driver
Have you ever wondered what is meant by Active and Reactive riding?
We have all been on a trail ride and had to fight with our horse to keep him from trying to eat every leaf he passes. Fighting with him and jerking on the reins causes us to react to what the horse is
doing. We have also been leading our horse when he decieds to go the other way causing us to pull, fight and be out of control and reacting to what ever our horse does next.We are reacting to what
the horse does causing frustration, agrivation and a total loss of the fun from our equestrian activity. We also take a chance to break the main rule of training, We can't get hurt, the Horse can't get hurt
and the Horse should be calmer at the end of a session that he was in the beginning. On our trail ride the horse has just caused us to miss mother nature and the reason whe went riding in the first place.
An Active rider would have his horse so that he could ask him to do something other than pull and control us. We have to get to a point in our training where the horse listens to us over that leaf or
what ever has his attention while leading. How do we do this? We have to soften his neck which will get him listening to us and beginning to drop his head and relax. This also will help when the
deer runs out in front of you and your horse and you have a major panic attack, by dropping his head he will relax and listen to you. Following his neck being soft we can then begin to control his
shoulders and hips causing him to go where we want him to go. When we can move his hips when and where we want we can disengage his hips taking all the power from him and give us both time
to watch the deer run off rather than us running off. Control and attention together will make our ride an Active, fun, relaxing time rather than frustraitng Reactive ride.
To be an Active rider we are talking about having control of our horse so he does what we want, move hips, shoulders, drop his head, rather than us having to pull, and react to what he wants to do.
The point is for us to make through constant, progressive training the horse the reactive partner. He should react to our commands rather than us reacting to his lack of knowledge and fear. This is the
only way we can ride, enjoying mother nature and our riding friends. Remember start off with the basic easy steps and build to your complex control trought a lession plan. Our goal is control not
the soft neck the moving shoulder or hip. Come join us in a clinic and learn to the steps of becomming an Active rather than Reactive rider. Good luck in your training.
