The Gotland by Marjorie Griffin
They are curious and friendly and willing partners in whatever endeavor you might ask of them.
By Marjorie Griffin
The Gotlands are of a slight confirmation with a straight head, short muscular neck and beautiful large eyes. They have a long back with a low-set tail and are strong in the shoulders. Their hard hooves require minimal care. They come in most colors, with dark brown bay being the most common. The thick mane and tail add a flashy look to this attractive horse. The most outstanding features of the Gotlands pertain to their personalities and training abilities. They are curious and friendly and willing partners in whatever endeavor you might ask of them. One of the currently popular clinicians happened to work with a Gotland. When I later asked him what he thought of them, he replied, "You don't have to train a Gotland, you just tell them what to do". As with most horses, when training them they need to be worked with and not against and to be ready to understand that which is asked of them. They do learn very easily and quickly and are cooperative in the process. The Gotlands are used in nearly all disciplines. They move well at the walk and have a beautiful trot and are outstanding jumpers. They are great for dressage, harness racing and driving. Obviously, due to their size, they work well for children, but are also fine for lightweight, shorter adults. Small horses are not just for kids!! If you are tired of being dwarfed by your horse when you groom him or have to get a step-up to get on to ride, then this size is right for you! And in driving, one of the things that Gotlands do best, an individuals size and weight make absolutely no difference. This truly is a horse for everyone!
