Horse Grease by Sergents 3, LLC
Horse Grease by Sergents 3, LLC is a powerful, safe, weather-proof anti-chew grease made from thickened mineral oil and a yucky substance to stop the chewers in your barn!
Are Your Horses “Busy Beavers”— Chewing Fencing, Stalls and More?
We’ve all experienced it. The doorframe of your horse’s beautiful stall, with bite-sized chew marks and chunks of wood missing or portions of the wood fence— eaten down with guilty faces staring back at you saying “He did it— not me!” . It’s a little bit funny and a lot a bit NOT funny— because stalls, fencing and whatever they are chewing, is something you paid for and not meant to be destroyed.. but what is a horse owner to do?
Horse Grease Is The ANSWER!
Horse Grease™ is a thick, weather-resistant mineral oil-based chili pepper grease created to stop horses and livestock from chewing on wood, rubber, leather, and just about anything else they shouldn’t be chewing. Designed by a long-time industrial grease maker and a rodeo horseman, this powerful product combines the bad taste of anti-chew remedies with the durability of industrial-grade grease. It stays where you put it—no dripping, evaporating, or freezing—making it a game changer for farms and ranches nationwide.
How Did "Horse Grease" Come To Be?
It all started when a rodeo friend, frustrated by his "beaver horse," came to the creator of Horse Grease™ for a solution. He had tried several homemade anti-chew recipes, but they always failed—dripping off, washing away, or drying up in the sun. The grease maker, who specialized in high-resistance grease for industrial drill bits, realized he could apply that same technology to the barnyard. They took mineral oil (a substance safe enough to be used in baby oil and castor oil), blended it with a stinging chili pepper essence, and turned it into a durable, non-toxic deterrent. It worked instantly. Not only did the horse stop chewing, but the product didn’t hurt the horse, the wood, or the environment. Soon other horse owners tried it, and the results were the same. Thus, Horse Grease™ was born.
How Does Horse Grease™ Work?
Horse Grease™ works in two powerful ways. First, the stinging taste of chili pepper creates an immediate unpleasant experience for animals that try to bite or chew an area. Second, its grease base makes it sticky, long-lasting, and water-resistant—it doesn’t melt, freeze, or get absorbed into wood if properly sealed beforehand. Bugs don’t like it either. In fact, many customers report that insects die after crawling across the treated surfaces, making this product double as a bug repellent.
Is Horse Grease™ Safe For Horses and Other Animals?
Yes, Horse Grease™ is non-toxic, non-flammable, and completely safe when used as directed. The main ingredient is pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil—commonly found in products like baby oil and oral medications—combined with naturally derived bitter agents and chili pepper extract. It won’t hurt animals or people, though it’s definitely unpleasant if you get it in your eyes. Always wear gloves when applying.
What Can Horse Grease™ Be Used On?
Horse Grease™is ideal for:
• Wood fences
• Barn walls
• Stalls
• Paddock rails
• Rubber surfaces
• Halters, reins, or tack
• Trailer doors and walls
• Bandages (if your horse likes to chew them)
• Trees or other chewable structures
Note: It’s suitable for horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, cows, goats, sheep, dogs, and even puppies or exotic livestock.
How Do I Apply Horse Grease™?
Application is simple. You can use a cloth, a butter knife, a stick, or your (gloved) fingers. The key is to apply a thin layer first, then go thicker if needed. Best practice is to let the horse smell it, even taste a little, then apply it where chewing is a problem. You’ll likely only need one or two tastes for them to learn to leave it alone.
Pro Tip: If applying to porous wood, first spray a silicone sealer on the surface so the grease doesn’t soak in. That allows the grease to sit on top and be more effective for a longer period.
How Long Does It Last Once I Apply It?
Under dry conditions, Horse Grease™ can last for several weeks or even longer. On porous surfaces without a sealant, it may need to be reapplied more frequently. In areas exposed to heavy rain, check the surface after storms. Even if some grease is washed away, enough of the bitter taste usually remains to remain effective. A little goes a long way.
Is Horse Grease™ Messy Or Hard To Remove?
It can be, but cleanup is easy. To remove it from hands, tools, or surfaces, use rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, or paint thinner. Because it’s designed to resist water and temperature changes, soap and water won’t cut it. That’s part of what makes it so effective in the field.
Does Horse Grease™ Repel Bugs Too?
Yes. Bugs avoid it for the same reason horses do—they don’t like the texture or the sting. In fact, some users have reported that it can kill bugs that crawl through it. This makes it especially handy in barns and stall corners that are prone to flies or ants.
Can Horse Grease™ Be Used In Any Season?
Absolutely. Horse Grease™ is designed to resist all weather conditions. It won’t freeze in winter, it won’t melt in summer, and it won’t immediately evaporate in dry air. That means it stays right where you put it—rain or shine, heat or cold.
What Sizes Are Available?
Horse Grease™ comes in multiple sizes to suit your needs:
• 4 oz Tube – Great for testing or occasional use $13.86
• 10 oz Bottle – Ideal for barns with a couple of chewers $22.45
• 1 Gallon Bucket – Best value for multiple horses or large farms- $223.63

Does Horse Grease™ Have a Strong Smell?
Not at all. It is virtually odorless. The bitter taste does the work, not a strong or irritating scent. That makes it much easier to use around sensitive horses and in closed-in environments like stalls or trailers.
Is It Safe for Use Around Food or Water Buckets?
Yes—though we do recommend applying it a few inches away from any feed or water sources, simply to avoid cross-contamination or accidental ingestion. If an animal does lick a bit of the grease, it won’t harm them—but they’ll probably regret it and not try again.
What Makes Horse Grease™ Different From Other "Anti-Chew" Products?
Horse Grease™ is unique because it combines industrial-grade durability with all-natural safety. Most sprays evaporate, wash off, or require frequent reapplication. This product stays on surfaces for weeks and doesn’t rely on alcohol or solvents. Its thick consistency means it doesn’t run or drip, and it can be used in extreme conditions.
Can It Be Used With Other Deterrents?
You can, but you likely won’t need to. One taste of Horse Grease™ usually teaches even the most determined chewers a quick lesson. If you want extra power on porous wood, use a silicone sealer first to keep the grease from soaking in.
Will It Stain My Wood or Leather?
Horse Grease™ may darken porous materials like wood or leather temporarily, but it does not permanently stain them. That said, it is a grease—so always test on a small area first if you're concerned about appearance.
Can I Use It Indoors?
Yes. It's safe to use in indoor stalls, trailer interiors, tack rooms, or other enclosed spaces. Just be aware that it's sticky, so take care around grooming tools or bedding.
Where Can I Buy Horse Grease™?
You can order directly from HorseGrease.com, where you’ll find all sizes available for shipment. It's also available through select tack stores and online equine retailers.
What If My Dog Chews His Paws, HotSpots or Wounds?
Bitter Balm™ is the specially designed to help! Bitter Balm™ is a safe, effective solution for dogs that lick, chew, or gnaw at hot spots, paw pads, minor sores, or sutures. Made from thickened pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil with a powerful bitter agent, this balm deters unwanted chewing without causing any stinging or irritation. It's non-toxic, making it ideal for even sensitive pups, and its long-lasting formula stays in place—resisting water, dirt, and temperature changes. Whether you're dealing with healing wounds, post-surgical care, or just a persistent paw licker, Bitter Balm™ offers a simple, veterinarian-trusted way to protect healing skin and prevent further injury or infection. Just apply a small amount to the affected area, and your dog will quickly learn that it’s not worth a second taste.
If You Have Horses That “Chew”— You Need HORSE GREASE!
Every barn has at least one chewer. Whether it's a bored gelding gnawing the rails or a filly who insists on turning halters into licorice ropes, chewing costs money and causes damage. Horse Grease™ is the first product we’ve used that actually stays in place, tastes bad enough to stop the habit, and lasts long enough to save both time and money. It’s earned a permanent spot in our barn. If you’re tired of duct tape solutions, weak sprays, or splinters in your horse’s teeth— Horse Grease™ is the real deal!
