Two Horse Lovers “With a Muddy Little Dream”…

Lori and Brian—are horse lovers, and inventors at heart, -proud residents of Albertville, Minnesota. They also happen to be the owners of "Ranchers Preferred" and the inventors of a brand-new hoof-cleaning tool we call the HoofWand™. Their journey started, like many great inventions, in a moment of pure frustration. February 2024 was one for the books here in Minnesota. Instead of snowdrifts and frozen nostrils, they got warm, wet, spring-like days that turned the paddocks into hoof-trapping mud pits. And while their two beautiful horses—Yanko (a magnificent Gypsy Vanner) and OB (a dignified Fell pony) along with their 14 pasture mates —enjoyed the weather, their hooves did not!

Lori and Brian were dealing with one abscess after another. The wet-dry cycles created cracks in the hoof wall, the mud packed in and stayed there, and bacteria did what bacteria do best—fester. We needed a tool that could handle soggy, waterlogged hooves in February or any other muddy day. And let us tell you: there aren’t many tools that check that box, especially when your hands are freezing and your horses are looking at you like "you're not using that thing again, are you?" That’s when we said, “What if we made something better?” And that’s how the HoofWand™ was born.

How Did "Ranchers Preferred Get Their Name"

Lori and Brian spent days and weeks tossing around ideas and eventually decided to create Ranchers Preferred LLC, so that we could share our other products and ideas with the equine community. We’re not a big company. We’re just two people who love our horses, love solving problems, and got really tired of scraping mud with tools that weren’t designed for what we needed. The HoofWand™ is the result of barn trial and error, 3D model prototypes, and lots of muddy boots. But it works and there’s nothing else like it out there! HoofWand™ is the tool that does the job no other tool in the horse world wanted (lol) or can do well! It removes mud, manure, bacteria and gunk from the outside AND inside of your horse’s hooves! Can Using A Hoof Pick To Remove Mud, Harm My Horse?

The Periople is the thin, outer layer of the hoof wall, like your cuticle. The Periople helps retain moisture and protect the hoof wall from drying and cracking. When you use a metal hoof pick to remove mud and debris from the hoof wall, you can inadvertently damage the periople causing rough patches, dryness and flaking. Using a metal pick on the periople can even cause pain as this is a sensitive area of the hoof. Using a HoofWand will safely remove that crusty bacteria ridden mud from the periople, coronary band, and hoof wall without causing pain or damage.

How Often Can I Use The HoofWand™?

Great question! The HoofWand™ can, and should be, use daily! There is no limit to how often you can use the HoofWand. Daily use will help remove that bacteria filled mud from the hoof and coronary band preventing dryness, cracking, and abscesses.
