About Centaur Animal Health

Since it was founded in 1986, Centaur Animal Health business focus has been concentrated in adaptations of proven new technology -- with special emphasis in biotechnology -- converting successes from the human healthcare market to help similar problems in the animal health markets. Centaur’s first products were concentrated in the equine market, and focused on diagnostic technologies that were representative of ‘breakthrough innovations’. One such product is the Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) diagnostic that was adapted from the human Aids test and for which a patent was granted in 1995.

Centaur Animal Health and United Agriculture and Veterinary Products, Inc. (Unavet) were two separate Kansas City based animal health businesses that have been operational since the mid 1980’s. Both companies had been engaged in sales activity in separate but complimentary segments of the animal health market. The merging of the two existing companies in 2001 provided efficiencies and growth opportunities available that would not have been available to either company individually.

Does Your Horse Have The Digestive Support Necessary To Maintain Top Health And Feed Utilization? The digestive tract has often been referred to as the "engine" of the horse. It is the engine that supplies the power-- without an effective and well operating engine, you just won't go anywhere-- and it works very similarly with your horse.

About EGusin SLH® and EGUSIN 250®
These two great products from Centaur Animal Healthare natural feed supplements which have been demonstrated to be beneficial in promoting a healthy stomach and an aid in preventing the destruction of the stomach lining. EGUSIN® is not a pharmacological solution that might interfere with normal gastrointestinal function. EGUSIN® is a combination of ingredients that collectively work together to return the stomach to normal function.

Egusin® SLH Assists Horses Already Experiencing Gastric Disturbances! Is your horse already showing signs of gastric distress? Biting at their sides over and over? Irritable during cinching up the saddle? Laying down right after eating hay? Dunking their hay in water before eating? All of these may be a signal that your horse is experiencing gastric upset or disturbances! Egusin® SLH was formulated to help horses (and the owners that worry about them!) that are already experiencing gastric disturbances. Egusin® SLH is a pelleted combination of natural ingredients that has been demonstrated to be beneficial in addressing the primary causes of equine gastro-intestinal disturbances.

Egusin® 250 Helps Horses Maintain A Healthy Gut!

Every horse depends upon a healthy gut to maintain a good digestive and immune system. Once you have helped to restore the health and well being of your horse's digestive tract, Egusin® 250 is specially designed to help you Maintain that healthy gut! It is an alfalfa pellet based formulation of natural ingredients that has been demonstrated to be beneficial in promoting a healthy stomach and intestinal environment to avoid recurring gastro-intestinal disturbances in horses
So.... What Is The Egusin® Concept? Egusin consists of two types of stabilizing dietetic feed supplements for adult horses, young horses and foals suffering from Egus, stress periods and an imbalance in the intestinal system due to a high production of excess gastric acid.

Note:The Egusin® concept is based on a unique combination of active nutraceuticals, neutralizing excess gastric acid, protects the stomach lining and preventing the formation of “stress stomach” which can result in loose stools and signs of stomach discomfort-- something that all horse owners fear and watch for!
What Does The Egusin Concept Include?

The Egusin concept consists of two types of stabilizing dietetic feed supplement:

* Egusin® SLH- used as the first dietetic feed when “stress stomach” is observed-- in other words, gastric distress is already apparent.
* Egusin 250®- used as a “second follow diet” to maintain proper stomach function

Why Do We Use Whole Oat Groats?
Whole oat groats functional value
:
  • Beneficial dietetic fibers and nutritional components
  • Beta-glucan- gels in the stomach, acting as a coating for the stomach lining.
  • Insoluble oats fibers- delay the stomach emptying which aids in preventing gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Polar lipids- rich phospholipids aid in re-establishing the stomach lining.
  • Natural antioxidants- aid in protecting the muscle cells from degradation by the free radicals.
How Does Egusin® Work? Antacids neutralize excess corrosive gastric acid to protect the stomach lining against destruction. Lecithin, a phospholipid, restores damaged cell membranes. Pectin acts as a barrier under which the gastric mucosa membranes are allowed to heal. Natural antioxidants protect the cells from destructive free radicals.

Micro-milled whole oats also interact with stomach acid forming a gel to augment the protective barrier provide by Pectin. The oat fibers also delay gastric emptying so acid has something to act on besides the lining, and act as a substrate to carry away toxins and bacteria. EGUSIN® may be administered 3-5 days before, through, and during the return from an event to assure the stomach maintains normal function.

What If My Horse Is Displaying Real Stomach Distress? If there is acute stomach distress, try one bucket of EGUSIN SLH® sufficient for 21 days, then rotate over to the EGUSIN 250®, to maintain the health. If a horse resumes normal foraging, EGUSIN®, may be discontinued. Some customers have reported the need to resume use possibly due to the long standing effects of chronic stomach lesions. EGUSIN SLH® and EGUSIN 250® do more, work faster, and cost considerably less, than other products.
What Customers Say

My 13 yr. old TB gelding just finished his second week on Egusin SLH, and the product is already living up to and exceeding expectations. My horse had been subjected to many acute and chronic stressors that are known to cause ulcers (i.e. extended periods of stall confinement/lack of adequate for several years, a recent move to a new farm, and then a 6-8 week bout of rapid weight loss from an insufficient feeding regimen).

What separates EGUSIN SLH® from EGUSIN 250®?

Centaur Animal Health builds the EGUSIN® line as a two-stage gut program rather than a single product. EGUSIN SLH® is the intensive pellet formulation aimed at horses actively exhibiting gastrointestinal disturbances, fed for a minimum 21-day regimen. EGUSIN 250® is the alfalfa-pellet maintenance formula recommended after that 21-day course to keep the stomach and intestinal environment healthy and to discourage GI disturbances from recurring. Together they cover both the recovery phase and the long-term maintenance phase.

How does the formula protect the stomach lining?

The EGUSIN® approach layers several mechanisms. Antacids provide instant and sustained neutralization of corrosive gastric acid to shield the stomach lining from destruction, while elevated lecithin helps protect the gastric mucosal membranes and re-establish the stomach lining. Pectin and beta-glucan form a coating that binds toxins and creates a barrier against acid, and the fiber-rich base increases the viscosity of intestinal content to support tissue recovery and nutrient absorption.

What does the LSU research show?

EGUSIN® was evaluated in a peer-reviewed crossover study by Woodward, Huff, Garza, Keowen, Kearney, and Andrews, published in BMC Veterinary Research (2014). Nine Thoroughbred horses received EGUSIN 250®, EGUSIN SLH®, or a control, fed twice daily across treatment and feed-deprivation periods designed to induce ulcers. By day 35, horses treated with EGUSIN® had less severe non-glandular gastric ulcers than untreated control horses, whose ulcer scores remained high.

How is EGUSIN® fed?

EGUSIN® is an easy-to-administer, no-waste top dress with a palatable formulation that mixes into the feed concentrate, and the maker notes that horses willingly eat it. The directions call for feeding an adult horse one scoop twice daily for a minimum of 21 days, with a 10 lb. size equaling a 21-day supply for one horse. After the 21-day EGUSIN SLH® treatment, Centaur recommends transitioning to EGUSIN 250® to avoid recurring GI disturbances.

The Solution Section (FAQ)
What is the difference between EGUSIN SLH® and EGUSIN 250®?
EGUSIN SLH® is formulated for horses that are already showing signs of gastric disturbance, used as the first dietetic feed when a "stress stomach" is observed. EGUSIN 250® is a maintenance formula designed to help keep the gut healthy once normal function has been restored. Many owners start with EGUSIN SLH® and then rotate to EGUSIN 250® for ongoing support.
How do EGUSIN® supplements actually work in the horse's stomach?
EGUSIN® combines natural ingredients that work together rather than acting as a pharmacological treatment. Antacids neutralize excess corrosive gastric acid, lecithin (a phospholipid) helps restore damaged cell membranes, pectin forms a barrier under which the gastric mucosa can heal, and natural antioxidants protect cells from free radicals. Micro-milled whole oats also form a gel that augments the protective barrier and delays gastric emptying.
What signs suggest my horse might have gastric upset?
Common signals include biting at the sides repeatedly, irritability while cinching up the saddle, lying down right after eating hay, or dunking hay in water before eating. Watery or loose stools, weight loss, rapid "inhaling" of food, and a dull or spooky attitude can also point to gastric distress. EGUSIN SLH® was formulated specifically to help horses already experiencing these disturbances.
Why does EGUSIN® use whole oat groats?
Whole oat groats supply beneficial dietetic fibers and nutritional components that support stomach health. Their beta-glucan gels in the stomach to coat the lining, insoluble oat fibers delay stomach emptying to help prevent gastrointestinal disorders, and polar lipids (rich phospholipids) aid in re-establishing the stomach lining. The oats also carry natural antioxidants that help protect muscle cells from free-radical degradation.
How long does my horse need to be on EGUSIN SLH®?
For acute stomach distress, Centaur Animal Health suggests trying one bucket of EGUSIN SLH®, sufficient for 21 days, and then rotating over to EGUSIN 250® to maintain stomach health. If a horse resumes normal foraging, EGUSIN® may be discontinued, though some owners report a need to resume use due to the long-standing effects of chronic stomach lesions.
Can I use EGUSIN® around shows, travel, or other stressful events?
Yes. EGUSIN® consists of stabilizing dietetic feed supplements intended for adult horses, young horses, and foals dealing with EGUS, stress periods, and an imbalance in the intestinal system from excess gastric acid. EGUSIN® may be administered 3 to 5 days before, through, and during the return from an event to help the stomach maintain normal function.
Who makes EGUSIN®, and is the company experienced in animal health?
EGUSIN® is made by Centaur Animal Health, a Kansas City-based animal health company founded in 1986 that focuses on adapting proven new technology, with special emphasis on biotechnology, from the human healthcare market to the animal health market. What is EGUSIN SLH® used for?
EGUSIN SLH® is a pelleted, all-natural dietetic feed supplement formulated for horses exhibiting gastrointestinal disturbances. It is designed to promote a healthy stomach and impede destruction of the stomach lining associated with gastrointestinal disorders. It is fed as the intensive first stage of the EGUSIN® program for a minimum of 21 days.
What are the ingredients in EGUSIN®?
The EGUSIN® formula contains micro-milled whole oats (groats), lecithin, dehydrated alfalfa meal, dried apple pectin pulp, dextrose, sodium bicarbonate, Lithothamn (calcareous marine algae), yeast, fenugreek seed meal, magnesium oxide, and calcium propionate as a preservative. EGUSIN 250® is built around natural antioxidants, polar lipids, and micro-milled ground oat groats on an alfalfa-pellet base. All ingredients are natural and the product contains no prohibited drugs.
How does EGUSIN® work to support the stomach?
EGUSIN® layers several mechanisms. Antacids deliver instant and sustained neutralization of corrosive gastric acid to protect the stomach lining, while lecithin helps protect the gastric mucosal membranes and re-establish the lining. Pectin and beta-glucan create a protective coating, and the fiber-rich formula increases intestinal viscosity to support tissue recovery and nutrient absorption.
How do you feed EGUSIN SLH®?
Feed an adult horse one scoop twice daily for a minimum of 21 days. It is an easy-to-administer, no-waste top dress that mixes into the feed concentrate, and the palatable formulation is one that horses willingly eat. A 10 lb. size equals a 21-day supply for one horse.
What happens after the 21-day EGUSIN SLH® treatment?
After completing the 21-day EGUSIN SLH® regimen, Centaur Animal Health recommends transitioning to EGUSIN 250® to maintain a healthy gut and avoid the recurrence of gastrointestinal disturbances. EGUSIN 250® serves as the ongoing maintenance phase of the program.
Is EGUSIN® backed by research?
Yes. EGUSIN 250® and EGUSIN SLH® were evaluated in a peer-reviewed study published in BMC Veterinary Research in 2014 by Woodward, Huff, Garza, Keowen, Kearney, and Andrews. The crossover study used nine Thoroughbred horses fed the supplements twice daily across treatment and feed-deprivation periods designed to induce or worsen ulcers.
What did the EGUSIN® study find?
By day 35 of the study, horses treated with EGUSIN® had less severe non-glandular gastric ulcers compared to untreated control horses, whose ulcer scores remained high. Non-glandular ulcer scores significantly decreased in both the EGUSIN SLH® and EGUSIN 250® treated horses by day 35, while remaining elevated in the control group.
How much does EGUSIN SLH® cost?
EGUSIN SLH® is listed at $130.00 for a 14 lb container (SKU 090110) through the Centaur Animal Health online store. It can be ordered at centauranimalhealth.com/store or by calling Centaur Animal Health at 913-390-6184.
How much does EGUSIN 250® cost?
EGUSIN 250® is listed at $107.00 for a 14 lb container (SKU 090210) through the Centaur Animal Health online store. As the maintenance-phase formula, it is intended for ongoing daily feeding after the EGUSIN SLH® program.
Does EGUSIN® contain any prohibited drugs for competition horses?
No. Centaur Animal Health states that EGUSIN® contains no prohibited drugs or substances, making it suitable for use in performance and competition horses. It is an all-natural dietetic feed supplement rather than a pharmaceutical.
Who makes EGUSIN®?
EGUSIN® is manufactured by Centaur Animal Health, a company founded in 1986 and based in Olathe, Kansas. The company's business focus has centered on adaptations of proven new technology with special emphasis in biotechnology, and it produces equine, dairy, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic products.
How is EGUSIN® administered to picky eaters?
EGUSIN® is a palatable, pelleted formulation that mixes directly into the horse's feed concentrate, and the maker notes that horses willingly eat it. Because it is a no-waste top dress, it avoids the struggle of paste dosing and the waste common with powders that horses sort out of their feed.
Why does EGUSIN® include alfalfa and oat fiber?
The alfalfa-pellet base and micro-milled oat groats provide both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fibers support stomach and colon stability, while insoluble oat fibers support the intestinal tract. The fiber-rich profile increases the viscosity of intestinal content, which helps protect tissue and support recovery and nutrient absorption.
What role does pectin and lecithin play in the formula?
Pectin, sourced in part from dried apple pectin pulp, forms a barrier against stomach acid and can bind toxins that contribute to digestive upset.
