How Did 5Strands Affordable Testing Come To Be?

5Strands Affordable Testing was founded 3 years ago by Lisa Blaurock, Ethan Steed, & Austin Collins. Lisa was having digestive issues for years & after paying thousands of dollars for several doctors to tell her that ‘we can’t figure out what’s wrong with you’, she got mad at the system and found answers for herself. After figuring out that she had to eliminate gluten, dairy & yeast items her digestive issues started going away. She has always had the desire of helping others and what better way to do that then by making yourself & your pet healthier and happier! 5Strands was created out of a burning desire to assist others— both animals and humans— to experience what “healthy" feels like. Sometimes in this busy world we neglect looking after our own body and that of our horse, dogs or other pets. It is extremely easy to just eat the first thing in sight or what is available in the present moment, or to just open up a bag of kibble, or sack of grain— and pour it out for our animals to consume. But was it the best thing to eat? Food is the Fuel for our body— are you putting things in your body, or that of your animals, that can actually cause harm? 5Strands can give you a roadmap and put you and your animals on the wonderful ‘path of health’!

5Strands Mission Statement is: “To empower families with a voice about their own health care and that of their pets. We strive to fill the void of consumer-driven needs with our affordable testing”.

5Strands tests for "Intolerances"-What is the difference between an "Allergy" and an "Intolerance"?
Some of the symptoms will overlap. However, there are a few important differences. An allergy is a reaction involving the immune system. This reaction is typically immediate and can be life threatening. Most of the time, the symptomatic response will be vomiting or diarrhea, severe hives, facial swelling, or shortness of breath. An intolerance does not involve the immune system and has a delayed reaction. The response will not be life threatening. A food intolerance will typically indicate that your pet is lacking the digestive enzymes to break down a certain food item and digest it. In results, they will experience unpleasant and unwanted physical reactions. Symptoms of intolerances are bloating, stomach pain, itchiness, inflammed skin, sneezing, watery and red eyes, poor skin and coat, hair loss, eye discharge, and anal gland swelling. Some, if not most of these issues are very difficult to see on your pet until it is too late and turned into an ongoing issue.

The most common of the symptoms will be the excessive itching and paw biting.

What does the Comprehensive Equine Intolerance & Imbalance Test actually screen?

The Comprehensive Equine Intolerance & Imbalance Test ($136.00) reads a small hair sample against 290+ items spanning four categories: food intolerances (proteins, grains, vegetables, fruits, fats, additives and preservatives), environmental intolerances (fabrics, grasses, trees, insects, essential oils), nutritional imbalances across vitamins and minerals, and a metals & minerals assessment that gauges how well your horse processes and eliminates them. Instead of guessing which feed or pasture is behind the head-shaking, hives, hoof issues or off days, the report shows you exactly where the imbalances sit. It is built to work for all ages and breeds.

Who founded 5Strands Affordable Testing?

5Strands was co-founded by Austin Collins (CEO), Lisa Blaurock (President) and Ethan Steed (COO). Austin developed the idea as a college baseball player wrestling with acne, joint pain, digestive trouble and fatigue, then discovered how his own food intolerances were dragging down his performance. Lisa, who describes herself as "simply a mom on a mission who got frustrated with the system and desired to find a better way," spent years and thousands of dollars on doctors before deciding to build a faster, more affordable path. Their stated purpose: "We believe everyone deserves to eat with confidence and feel at home in their body."

How the hair-sample collection works at home

No vet visit, no needles and no blood draw. You register the kit, then collect hair from anywhere on the horse's body by brushing with a clean comb or brush, cutting, or gently pulling — roots are not required. The guideline is 10-15 strands when the hair is longer than one inch, or 20-25 strands when it is shorter than one inch. You seal it in the included collection bag and drop it in the mail using the prepaid return shipping.

How fast you get results and how you read them

Once the processing center receives the sample, results are emailed back within roughly 5-7 days, with the full turnaround running about 5-10 business days door to door. The report is organized by severity level so you can see at a glance which feeds, bedding, grasses or nutrients are flagged highest, and it is delivered digitally for access via the mobile app. The lab retains the hair sample for 60 days, which lets you upgrade to a broader panel without collecting a fresh sample.

What testing method 5Strands uses

5Strands screens the hair sample using bioresonance technology, an approach the company says is rooted in the European healthcare system. The founders are deliberate that this is a wellness and lifestyle screening tool — Lisa notes "our testing empowers people with real, actionable insights without relying solely on pills or prescriptions." The aim is to help owners adjust diet and environment proactively rather than chase symptoms after they flare. The brand carries "Doctor Recommended," "Veterinary Approved," "Holistic Health" and "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" badges.

Why owners choose 5Strands for value

The pitch in the company name is affordability: at $136.00 for 290+ tested items, the comprehensive equine kit works out to roughly $0.43 per item screened — a fraction of conventional itemized testing. More than 450,000 customers have used 5Strands testing across people, dogs, cats and horses. Free U.S. shipping applies on orders over $50, and kits are also stocked through equine and pet retailers, so you can order direct at 5strands.com or pick one up from a trusted supplier.

The Solution Section (FAQ)
What does 5 Strands Affordable Testing do for pets?
5 Strands Affordable Testing screens your dog or other pet for food and environmental intolerances using a few strands of hair. The results help you make the dietary and lifestyle changes needed to address issues like itchy skin, paw biting, and digestive upset. Tests are mailed in and can be ordered for animals as well as people.
What is the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance?
An allergy is an immune-system reaction that is typically immediate and can be life-threatening, often causing vomiting, diarrhea, severe hives, facial swelling, or shortness of breath. An intolerance does not involve the immune system and has a delayed, non-life-threatening response, usually because your pet lacks the enzymes to break down a certain food. 5 Strands tests specifically for intolerances, the most common symptoms of which are excessive itching and paw biting.
Which dog tests does 5 Strands offer and what do they cost?
5 Strands offers two pet tests. The Pet Standard Package is $144 and covers 255 potential food intolerances plus 100 potential environmental intolerances such as trees, grasses, chemicals, fabrics, and dust mites. The Pet Food Intolerance Test is $88 and covers 255 potential food intolerances including proteins, seafood, fruits and veggies, grains, fats, additives, and preservatives.
How does the 5 Strands test work?
You send in a few strands of hair from your pet (or yourself), and 5 Strands tests the sample for intolerances. As they put it, the answers you need are just a few strands of hair away.
How do I read my 5 Strands results report?
You receive a comprehensive report that color-codes every item like a stoplight. Level 3 (STOP) items registered an imbalance likely to cause noticeable symptoms and should be eliminated; Level 2 (Slow Down) items should be avoided or greatly reduced; and Level 1 (Be Aware) items registered only a low-level imbalance and should be limited. The flagged items can be cross-referenced against the master list of everything your pet was tested for.
What should I do after I get my dog's results?
Use the report as a screening tool to remove the flagged items from your dog's diet and environment. Feed only what is left on the master list for 6 to 8 weeks and watch to see if the symptoms lessen. 5 Strands also provides helpful videos that walk you through reading the report and making the transition easier.
Can 5 Strands test horses and other animals too?
Yes. 5 Strands was created to help both animals and humans experience what healthy feels like, and the company speaks directly to owners of horses, dogs, and other pets. The same hair-sample approach lets you check what your animals are eating instead of just pouring out kibble or grain and hoping it agrees with them.
How do I order a 5 Strands test or learn more?
Visit https://www.5strands.com to order a test or read customer case studies, or call 833-600-8378 to speak with their staff. Send in a few strands of hair and let them help set you and your animals on the path to better health.
What is the 5Strands Comprehensive Equine Intolerance & Imbalance Test?
It is an at-home hair-sample test for horses that screens 290+ items across four categories: food intolerances, environmental intolerances, nutritional imbalances, and metals & minerals processing. It is priced at $136.00 and is designed to help owners pinpoint which feeds, surroundings or nutrients may be affecting a horse's comfort and performance. The kit works for all ages and breeds.
How does the hair-sample collection work?
You register the kit, then collect hair from anywhere on your horse's body by brushing with a clean comb or brush, cutting, or gently pulling. Roots are not required. Provide 10-15 strands if the hair is longer than one inch, or 20-25 strands if it is shorter than one inch, then mail it back using the included prepaid return shipping.
How long does it take to get results?
Results are typically emailed back within about 5-7 days of the lab receiving the hair sample. Counting shipping time both ways, most owners see a full turnaround of roughly 5-10 business days. Results are delivered digitally for access through the mobile app.
What does the equine test screen for exactly?
The four categories are food intolerances (proteins, grains, vegetables, fruits, fats, additives and preservatives), environmental intolerances (fabrics, grasses, trees, insects and essential oils), nutritional imbalances in vitamins and minerals, and a metals & minerals assessment of how well the horse processes and eliminates them. Together these cover 290+ tested items.
Who founded 5Strands Affordable Testing?
5Strands was co-founded by Austin Collins (CEO), Lisa Blaurock (President) and Ethan Steed (COO). Austin developed the concept as a college baseball player struggling with acne, joint pain, digestive issues and fatigue, after learning how his own food intolerances were hurting his performance. Lisa, who had spent years and thousands of dollars on doctors, joined the mission to build a faster, more affordable approach.
What testing method does 5Strands use?
5Strands screens the hair sample using bioresonance technology, an approach the company says originates in the European healthcare system. It is positioned as a wellness and lifestyle screening tool rather than a medical diagnostic. The founders emphasize giving owners actionable insights to adjust diet and environment instead of relying solely on pills or prescriptions.
How much does the equine test cost and why is it called 'affordable'?
The Comprehensive Equine Intolerance & Imbalance Test is $136.00. Because it screens 290+ items, that works out to roughly $0.43 per item tested. That per-item value is the basis for the '5Strands Affordable Testing' name compared with conventional itemized testing.
Is this a diagnostic medical test or a vet replacement?
It is a wellness and intolerance/imbalance screening, not a diagnostic medical test, and it is not a substitute for veterinary care. The report is meant to help you and your vet make informed changes to feed, supplements and environment. The brand carries 'Veterinary Approved,' 'Doctor Recommended' and 'Holistic Health' badges.
Do I need a vet, needles or a blood draw to use the kit?
No. The entire process is at-home and non-invasive, using only a small hair sample. There are no needles, no blood draw and no vet visit required to collect or submit the sample. You can take the hair from anywhere on the horse's body.
What signs in my horse might prompt this test?
Owners often turn to it for recurring issues such as skin irritation and hives, head-shaking, digestive upset, dull coat, hoof problems, low energy or inconsistent performance. Because the report flags specific feeds, grasses, bedding fabrics, insects and nutrient gaps, it helps narrow down the likely triggers. From there you can adjust the diet and environment and monitor improvement.
How are the results presented?
Results are organized by severity level, so the highest-flagged feeds, environmental items and nutrients stand out immediately. They are delivered digitally and accessed through the 5Strands mobile app. This lets you sort the strongest intolerances and imbalances first when planning changes to your horse's routine.
Can I upgrade my test after submitting a sample?
Yes. The lab retains your hair sample for 60 days, which allows you to upgrade to a broader panel without collecting and mailing a fresh sample. This is useful if you start with a narrower kit and later decide you want the full comprehensive screening.
Does 5Strands offer a satisfaction guarantee?
The brand displays a '100% Satisfaction Guaranteed' badge alongside its 'Doctor Recommended,' 'Veterinary Approved' and 'Holistic Health' seals. These reflect the company's confidence and its holistic, wellness-first positioning. For the current terms, owners should check the policies on 5strands.com.
Where can I buy the 5Strands equine test?
You can order directly from the company at https://www.5strands.com, where free U.S. shipping applies on orders over $50. The kits are also carried by equine and pet retailers and marketplaces. Buying direct ensures you get the current comprehensive equine kit and app access.
Does 5Strands also make tests for other animals and people?
Yes. Beyond the equine line, 5Strands offers pet kits including the Pet Food Intolerance Test ($83.00), the Pet Food Intolerance & Environmental Sensitivity Test ($123.00) and a Raw & Fresh Pet Food Intolerance Test ($76.00), plus human testing. More than 450,000 customers have used 5Strands testing across people, dogs, cats and horses.
Will the test tell me which feed to switch my horse to?
The report identifies which specific feed ingredients, grasses, environmental items and nutrients are flagged as intolerances or imbalances, ranked by severity. It does not prescribe a brand of feed, but it gives you a clear, prioritized list of what to reduce or eliminate and where nutritional gaps may exist. You then use that to adjust the diet, ideally in consultation with your vet or equine nutritionist.
What is included in the equine test kit?
The kit includes the registration process, a hair-collection bag, prepaid return shipping, and digital access to your results through the mobile app. Everything you need to collect and submit a sample at home is in the box. There are no extra lab fees beyond the kit price.
