Why Does My Horse Have Weak, Cracked or Tender Hooves?
When the Problem May Not Begin in the Hoof

Key Question
What causes recurring hoof cracks, weak hoof growth and tender soles when trimming, shoeing and topical treatments have not solved the problem?
A horse develops cracked hoof walls, weak growth, recurring white line problems, tender soles or feet that never seem to improve. Naturally, the first place we look is the hoof.
We change the trimming schedule, try a different shoeing approach, add a hoof supplement, apply topical products or even change farriers. Sometimes those changes are exactly what the horse needs.
But what happens when the hoof still does not improve?
That is when it may be time to ask a different question:
What if the problem showing up in the hoof did not begin in the hoof?
The hoof is part of the whole horse. Its quality can reflect farrier care, biomechanics, environment, workload, nutrition, metabolic health and the horseβs ability to build and maintain healthy tissue.
Sometimes the hoof is where a much larger problem becomes visible.
Start With the Foundation
Good hoof care is essential. A well-balanced trim, appropriate shoeing when needed, regular maintenance and careful attention to hoof conformation all matter.
Long toes, underrun heels, poor mediolateral balance or excessive time between farrier visits can place abnormal stress on the hoof capsule and the structures above it. No nutritional program can compensate for consistently poor hoof balance or inappropriate shoeing.
Environment matters too. Frequent exposure to muddy or unsanitary conditions may soften hoof tissues and contribute to problems such as thrush. Repeated wet-and-dry conditions may also affect the durability of the hoof wall, while some horses develop brittle or cracking feet during prolonged dry weather.
Begin by evaluating the fundamentals:
- Is the horse receiving regular, appropriate farrier care?
- Is the hoof properly balanced?
- Is the horseβs environment reasonably clean and dry?
- Are cracks, infections, abscesses or white line separation being treated appropriately?
- Is the horse moving comfortably and loading each foot normally?
If those basics are being handled correctly and the same problems continue, it may be time to widen the investigation.
Healthy Hooves Need the Right Building Materials
The hoof wall is primarily composed of keratinized tissue that is continually produced by living structures within the foot. Healthy hoof growth depends on the nutrients required to build strong keratin and support the internal structures connected to the hoof capsule.
Protein is one of those essential building materials, but crude protein alone does not tell the entire story.
Protein quality matters, and so do essential amino acids. A horse may appear to receive sufficient total protein while the overall diet still provides an inadequate balance of the amino acids needed to support healthy tissue development.
That becomes particularly important when poor hoof quality appears alongside other concerns, such as:
- Loss of topline
- Poor muscle development
- A dull coat
- Slow recovery following work
- Difficulty maintaining appropriate body condition
- Weak or slow-growing hooves
Think of building a house. You may have excellent roofing material, but without enough lumber and structural support, you still cannot build a strong house.
The hoof also requires the proper building blocks.
A Hoof Supplement Cannot Fix Everything
Many owners reach for a hoof supplement when they notice cracks, weak walls, slow growth or tender soles. That may be appropriate when the supplement addresses a genuine nutritional need.
The problem begins when we assume that a product labeled for hoof support must automatically be the answer.
A hoof supplement may contain biotin, zinc, copper, methionine or other nutrients associated with normal hoof growth. But if the horseβs complete diet is unbalanced, adding another product may not resolve the underlying problem. It could also duplicate nutrients already being provided by fortified feed or other supplements.
Instead of asking only:
βWhat hoof supplement should I buy?β
Consider asking:
βWhat is my horseβs complete diet providing, and is that diet supporting healthy hoof growth?β
A supplement works as part of the total nutritional programβnot separately from it.
Do Not Stop at the Spreadsheet
Modern ration-balancing programs can be extremely helpful. They calculate calories, protein, vitamins, minerals and nutrient ratios and allow us to compare a horseβs diet with established nutritional recommendations.
A properly balanced ration is an important foundation, but the calculations are only as reliable as the information entered.
Actual forage values, accurate feeding amounts, ingredient changes and whether the horse consistently consumes the entire ration can all affect the result.
Questions worth asking include:
- Has the forage actually been tested?
- Is the horse eating the amount of hay being calculated?
- Is the commercial feed being provided at the manufacturerβs recommended rate?
- Has the feed formula recently changed?
- What is the quality and amino-acid profile of the protein?
- Are several supplements providing the same nutrients?
- Is the horseβs workload different from what the ration assumes?
- Are digestive, dental or metabolic factors affecting the horseβs nutritional needs?
The numbers should then be considered alongside the horseβs body condition, topline, coat, hoof quality, workload, health history and response over time.
A computer can organize the numbers. It cannot stand in the barn aisle and observe the horse.
Minerals Work in Relationships
Copper and zinc are frequently discussed in hoof nutrition because both contribute to normal tissue development and keratin formation. However, minerals do not work independently, and more is not necessarily better.
Forage, water, commercial feed and multiple supplements all contribute to a horseβs total mineral intake. Iron also deserves consideration because many equine diets already provide more iron than the horse requires, particularly when forage, water and soil contamination are considered.
Rather than adding individual minerals based solely on visible symptoms, evaluate the complete rationβpreferably using a representative forage analysis. Look at total amounts, unnecessary duplication and important mineral relationships.
The goal is not to keep adding nutrients. The goal is to provide the right nutrients in appropriate amounts as part of a balanced program.
Every Supplement Counts
Electrolytes are important for horses that lose substantial fluid and minerals through sweat, but the product and amount should match the horseβs workload, climate, diet and health status.
Some electrolyte products contain dextrose, glucose, molasses or other sugar-based ingredients for palatability or absorption. For most horses, the significance depends on the amount consumed and the complete dietβnot simply the presence of an ingredient on the label.
Owners of easy keepers and horses with insulin dysregulation or a history of laminitis should review feed and supplement labels particularly carefully.
This does not mean horses should be denied electrolytes when they genuinely need them. It means the product should be selected for a reason and matched to the individual horse.
The larger lesson applies to every supplement: know why it is being fed, what it contributes and whether it duplicates something already in the ration.
Look at the Rest of the Horse
Poor hoof quality should rarely be evaluated in complete isolation.
Ask what else may have changed:
- Has the horse lost topline?
- Is the coat dull?
- Does the horse seem stiff or reluctant to move?
- Has performance or behavior changed?
- Is recovery after exercise taking longer?
- Has body weight or condition changed?
- Are there digestive concerns?
- Is the horse landing differently on one foot?
- Did several symptoms begin at approximately the same time?
These observations may suggest that the hoof problem is only one part of a broader pattern.
A horse displaying several changes in tissue quality, movement, comfort or performance may need a complete review of diet, forage, workload, health history, hoof care and management.
Metabolic Health Can Affect the Feet
Some hoof problems have an underlying metabolic or endocrine component.
Horses with insulin dysregulation, equine metabolic syndrome or pituitary pars intermedia dysfunctionβcommonly called PPID or equine Cushingβs diseaseβmay have an increased risk of laminitis that cannot be addressed through farrier work or supplementation alone.
These conditions require veterinary evaluation and appropriate testing.
Sudden lameness, increased hoof heat, bounding digital pulses, an abnormal stance or reluctance to turn or move may indicate laminitis and warrant an immediate call to the veterinarian.
Do not wait for a nutrition consultation when acute laminitis is suspected.
A whole-horse approach does not replace the veterinarian or farrier. It helps organize and connect the information those professionals are already seeing.
Movement and Compensation Matter Too
The way a horse moves can affect hoof wear, balance and loading.
A horse protecting one limb may overload another. Back pain, hind-end weakness, poor saddle fit, muscular restriction or an old injury may change how the horse travels and lands on each foot.
Over time, an abnormal movement pattern may influence hoof wear and the shape of the hoof capsule. At the same time, painful or poorly balanced feet may alter movement and create compensatory patterns elsewhere in the body.
The hoof is part of a connected chain:
Feet affect movement, and movement affects feet.
This is why ongoing hoof problems may require cooperation among the veterinarian, farrier, nutrition professional, saddle fitter, bodyworker or rehabilitation professional.
Become a Detective for Your Horse
If your horse has a recurring hoof problem, begin documenting the whole picture.
Record when the problem first appeared. Look for changes in:
- Feed or supplements
- Hay or pasture
- Workload
- Farrier schedule
- Shoeing or trimming
- Weather and ground conditions
- Body weight and condition
- Movement and performance
- Health or medication
- Barn environment
Take clear photographs of the feet at regular intervals and, whenever possible, from consistent angles. Track hoof growth and changes between farrier visits. Save forage analyses, feed labels, veterinary findings and farrier observations.
Ask whether other symptoms appeared around the same time.
One clue may mean very little. Several clues pointing in the same direction can mean much more.

The answer may be farther from the hoof than you think.
