Ann at InfoHorse.com says

I have never been a fan of ground tie systems before-- until The Beyond Tack Ground Tie System! It is the safest ground tie system I have ever seen or used. Because the tie is so soft and broad, it can't really get tied up in the horse's feet. There are emergency situations where you need to ground tie a horse and corrals or trees for high ties aren't available-- and I very pleased to have it for my own horse who adjusted to it pretty quickly.

What exactly is the Beyond Tack Ground Tie System?

It is a complete stake-and-lead picket system that lets you secure a horse safely to the ground for grazing, resting, or overnight camping anywhere the trail takes you. A custom steel stake is driven flush into the earth and a UV-resistant PVC-tubing lead clips between it and the horse, creating a wide, swiveling circle of free movement. Beyond Tack bills it as "Equine Ground Tie Systems for Trail Riders, Campers & Packers" and as "the finest product of this type on the market."

Who builds it and where does it come from?

Beyond Tack is a small American maker based in Lincoln, California (phone ) that has been serving the equine community for over 12 years and proudly manufactures in the USA. Rather than chasing the lowest price point, the company engineers each stake to last and backs it with a replacement warranty, stating plainly: "This is not an attempt to build the cheapest stake, but one that has a replacement warranty. The finest stake you can buy for your horse."

How is the steel stake machined and protected?

The stake measures 18 inches long and is built to install flush to its base plate. Its shaft is cold rolled steel turned on a lathe, with the remaining pieces cut by laser jet, and the entire assembly is gold cad plated for corrosion resistance. Once seated, the stake maintains a full 360-degree swivel action while showing only about 1 1/2 inches above ground, so the lead rotates freely with the horse instead of winding up or tripping it.

Why does the PVC-tubing lead keep horses safer?

The lead uses UV-resistant PVC tubing as its outer material, which "Greatly resists kinking and tangling around your horse's hoof" while standing up to sun and weather. The 16 foot lead affords a 32 foot circle of movement and the 12 foot lead affords a 24 foot circle, giving your horse room to roll, sleep, or lunge. As the existing copy notes, the 16 ft lead carries bull snaps on both ends and a color rule for long service life: black end at the stake, red end at the head.

Who is it built for, and how should a horse be introduced to it?
The system is ideal for trail riders, campers, and packers who want to stake out horses in choice grazing areas, on rest breaks while traveling, or overnight in camp. Beyond Tack recommends introducing it gradually: drape the lead over the horse, let it drag in a pasture or stall, then hand-walk the perimeter at full extension, ideally after exercise when the horse is calm and ready to rest. Protect the pastern with shipping boots or wraps during first use, and note the firm caution that "THE SYSTEM IS NOT Recommended FOR Horses That Pull Back."

How do you buy a system or replacement parts?

Complete kits are sold directly through beyondtack.com: the 16 Foot Ground Tie System is $183.00 and the 12 Foot Ground Tie System is $157.00. Leads and components can be purchased separately, including the 16 Foot Lead Only at $123.00, the 12 Foot Lead Only at $102.00, the Stake Only at $75.00, and Bull Snap or Halter Clasp replacements at $6.50 each. What is the Beyond Tack Ground Tie System?
It is a complete equine picket system made up of a custom steel ground stake and a UV-resistant PVC-tubing lead that clips between the stake and the horse. It lets trail riders, campers, and packers safely secure a horse to the ground for grazing, resting, or overnight camping. Beyond Tack describes the line as 'Equine Ground Tie Systems for Trail Riders, Campers & Packers.'
How much does the Beyond Tack Ground Tie System cost?
The complete 16 Foot Ground Tie System is $183.00 and the complete 12 Foot Ground Tie System is $157.00. Both are sold directly at beyondtack.com.
What is the difference between the 12 foot and 16 foot systems?
The lead length determines how much room the horse has to move. The 16 foot lead affords a 32 foot circle of movement, while the 12 foot lead affords a 24 foot circle, with both giving the horse space to roll, sleep, or lunge. The 16 foot system costs $183.00 and the 12 foot system costs $157.00.
What is the lead made of?
The lead's outer material is UV-resistant PVC tubing, chosen for durability, horse comfort, and safety. The tubing 'GREATLY resists kinking and tangling around your horse's hoof,' and being UV resistant it stands up to sun and weather over a long service life.
What is the stake made of and how is it built?
The stake is 18 inches long and designed to install flush to its base plate. Its shaft is cold rolled steel created on a lathe, the other pieces are cut with a laser jet, and the entire assembly is gold cad plated for corrosion resistance. Beyond Tack calls it 'the finest stake you can buy for your horse.'
How does the 360-degree swivel work?
Once the stake is driven flush, it maintains a full 360-degree swivel action while showing only about 1 1/2 inches above ground. This lets the lead rotate freely as the horse circles the stake, so the line does not wind up, bind, or trip the animal.
How do I install the ground tie?
First select an area free from hazards such as rocks, prominent tree roots, and noxious weeds. Drive the stake into the ground with a hammer (Beyond Tack uses a 4 lb Stanley sledge hammer) until the base plate is flush with the ground, then clip the bull snap to the stake and the second snap to the halter, neck collar, or hobble. The complete setup takes about one minute.
Which end of the lead goes at the stake?
The 16 ft lead has bull snaps on both ends, with a color rule for longer service life: use the black end at the stake and the red end at the head ('red at head'). Following this orientation extends the working life of the lead.
Can I use the halter snap at the stake?
No. Beyond Tack warns in capital letters: 'DO NOT USE THE HALTER SNAP AT THE STAKE AS THIS CAN BREAK IF THE HORSE STEPS DIRECTLY ON IT.' The bull snap is the correct end for the stake, and the halter clasp belongs at the head, collar, or hobble.
Is the system safe for every horse?
It is designed for safety, but Beyond Tack is clear that 'THE SYSTEM IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR HORSES THAT PULL BACK.' Horses prone to pulling back should be trained out of that habit before being ground tied, and any horse should be introduced to the system gradually.
How do I introduce my horse to the ground tie system?
Acclimate gradually through desensitization: drape the lead around the horse's body, let it drag in a pasture or stall, then hand-walk the perimeter at full extension. Start the introduction after exercise when the horse is calm and seeking rest, and protect the pastern area with shipping boots or wraps during the first uses.
What is the system used for?
It is built for trail riders, campers, and packers. It secures a horse overnight in camp, stakes a horse out to take advantage of choice grazing areas, and lets horses be staked safely during rest breaks while traveling.
How do I remove the stake when I'm done?
Tap the head of the stake gently to loosen the grip of the soil while pulling up and shaking the head. Because the stake sits nearly flush and only about 1 1/2 inches show above ground, gentle loosening is enough to free it from the earth.
Can I buy just the lead or just the stake separately?
Yes. Beyond Tack sells components individually: the 16 Foot Lead Only is $123.00, the 12 Foot Lead Only is $102.00, and the Stake Only is $75.00. Small replacement parts are also available, including the Bull Snap and Halter Clasp at $6.50 each.
Does the stake come with a warranty?
Yes. Beyond Tack states the stake is built to a quality standard rather than a low price and 'has a replacement warranty.' The company frames it as a long-term investment, calling it the finest stake you can buy for your horse.
Who makes Beyond Tack and where are they located?
Beyond Tack is an American maker based in Lincoln, California that has served the equine community for over 12 years and manufactures its products in the USA. You can reach the company by phone at 916-521-5378 or order online at beyondtack.com.
How much clearance does my horse need around the stake?
Beyond Tack recommends siting the stake so the horse has at least a minimum 20-foot diameter grazing circle and is not encroaching on other animals. Choose ground free of rocks, prominent tree roots, and noxious weeds so the circle of movement stays safe and clear.
