About Pam Heintz, Creator, of Yukon Freedom Fit
Pam Heintz a British Horse Society Instructor, Instructor & Former Director for the local Dayton Area Pony Club and long-time horse enthusiast and native Daytonian grew up in the small town of Trotwood Ohio (appropriate for a horse lover) just North West of Dayton Ohio.Dayton Ohio, known as the birthplace of invention, has brought the world many pivotal inventions like the airplane, pull-top openers on pop cans, and the folding step ladder, just to name a few. So How Did The Freedom Fit Horse Blanket Come To Be? Every year Pam would blanket her show horse in the winter and every year, despite what blanket the horse wore, it would get a spot on the left shoulder were the fur would be rubbed off. Pam, being a creative seamstress, who makes clothing, wedding/prom dresses and even dog coats was determined to create a solution. One day, in the winter of 2016, as she was un-blanketing the horse, “a bolt of inspiration, like lightning hit”. She envisioned a shoulder gusset that would be angled to follow the angle of the horse’s shoulder and a separate piece that looked like a “Y” or yoke over the chest with sliding connection points that would relieve any binding or pressure spots on the horse’s shoulders and chest. After many mock ups, prototypes and manufactures, the patented Yukon Freedom Fit turnout blanket is ready for the market place. Is It True That Freedom Fit Is A Waterproof Turnout Blanket? YES! What Do Horse Owners Say About Freedom Fit Blankets? Testimonial #1

These blankets are a game-changer! 2 years ago I sent out a call for help for Maverick's blanket rubs! Shoulder guards made no difference, I had tried multiple blanket brands and haven’t found anything that didn’t cause shoulder rubs. Mav has a lot of shoulder movement and plays quite rough in the field. Because I show through the winter show circuit, blankets are not optional.

Maverick ended up with one of the very first prototypes of the Yukon Freedom Fit. It was amazing, within a month his hair was growing back even with him basically living in the medium weight blanket. The rest of that Spring and the following Winter he had that blanket on almost exclusively and no shoulder rubs in sight! The design works! If anyone has issues with blanket rubs, shoulders loosing hair, or even simply their horses lack of mobility with other blankets, I recommend you try Yukon Freedom Fit! Mav's blanket held up to 2 years of rough (and I mean rearing, biting, and sliding full force into the dirt Product imagerough) play! This fall he will be wearing it for the 3rd season in a row!! He’s Never had any blankets last this long. So glad I don’t have to by another blanket this fall. Yukon Freedom Fit blankets are worth their weight in gold! Testimonial #2

I have a high headed, narrow chest 16.2h TWH. (Tennessee Walking Horse) Finding a blanket that fit her front end has been difficult. I was excited to find out I could order a size 80 blanket with a narrow yoke. With this unique design feature, I finally have a blanket that properly fits my horse.

Is It True That Yukon Freedom Fit Has Quick Fit Halter? So glad you asked! The Yukon Quick Fit Halter™ is ideal for Equine operation where horses are lead to or from the barn to the field or turn out area. Traditional halters and lead ropes can be time consuming to put on and secure properly. Throwing a lead rope around the horse’s neck is not a safe way to lead a horse with a mind of its own. Quickly placed over the head and behind the ears, then secured halter with a pull of the lead rope around the nose. The whole process takes less than 2 seconds. To remove the halter, you just hold the cheek piece and pull forward allowing the halter to slide clear of the ears and muzzle, less than 1 second. Many minutes saved if moving a number of horses several times a day. Note: The Yukon Quick Fit Halters™ are available in 5 Colors: Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, and Black. 4 sizes: Horse, Cobb, Pony & Draft. They come standard with black lead ropes but optional colored lead ropes are available for an additional cost. All Yukon Products are Proudly made in Ohio USA and are only $25-$40 depending on size! What three patented features make the Freedom Fit blanket move with the horse?

The Yukon Freedom Fit blanket is built around three patented elements that work together to give the horse a custom shoulder fit. The patented Yoke Front sits over the chest and adjusts neck positioning through four D-rings and stainless steel thumbsnaps; the patented Angular Gusset is cut on an angle to follow the natural slope of the horse's shoulder; and the patented Sliding Connectors let the front of the blanket shift with the horse instead of binding. The yoke is offered in three widths — Small, Medium and Wide — so the fit can be matched to a narrow Thoroughbred neck or a heavier draft-cross chest.

Which three turnout weights does Yukon Freedom Fit offer?

The line comes in three fill weights so owners can match the blanket to the weather and to the horse's clip. The Unlined Turnout is a waterproof shell ideal for rainy, milder days; the Medium Weight adds a 200-gram quilted lining; and the Heavy Weight carries a 400-gram quilted lining that, in the company's words, "adds warmth without restricting movement." All three share the same patented Yoke Front, Angular Gusset and Sliding Connectors, so the freedom-of-movement design is identical across the range.

What hardware and construction details protect a turned-out horse?

The Freedom Fit turnout blankets are waterproof and built with heavy-duty stainless steel snaps and D-rings throughout. They use adjustable, non-elastic web leg straps that can be easily replaced if needed, a single girth surcingle positioned right behind the front legs, and a large tail flap that protects against wind whipping under the blanket. Who is creator Pam Heintz and where is the blanket made?

The blanket was designed and patented by Pam Heintz, a British Horse Society Instructor and former Instructor and Director for the Dayton Area Pony Club who grew up in Trotwood, Ohio. A lifelong horsewoman and creative seamstress — she also sews clothing, wedding and prom dresses, and dog coats — Pam set out to solve the rubbed shoulder spots her own show horse developed every winter, and the idea struck "like lightning" in the winter of 2016. The Solution Section (FAQ)
What makes the Yukon Freedom Fit™ Blanket different from other turnout blankets?
It has three patented features other blankets do not: a Yoke Front, an angular shoulder gusset, and sliding connectors. Together they follow the angle of the horse's shoulder and relieve binding or pressure across the chest and shoulders, which is what causes the fur loss and coat rubs you see with conventional blankets.
My horse loses hair on his shoulders under his blanket. Will this fix that?
That rubbing usually means the blanket is restricting the natural movement of the shoulder. The Yukon Freedom Fit™ design was created specifically to stop coat rubs, shoulder rubs, and skin abrasion by giving the shoulders and chest room to move. One owner reported her horse's hair grew back within a month of switching.
Is the Yukon Freedom Fit™ Blanket waterproof?
Yes. It is a waterproof turnout blanket built to be comfortable, durable, and trustworthy when you turn your horses out in rain, wind, or snow. To protect that waterproofing, the company says not to use laundry soap when washing it, as soap degrades the coating.
What weights and prices are available?
Three weights, all waterproof and with shipping included: the Unlined Light Weight at $195 for rainy days or keeping mud off, the Medium Weight with 200-gram quilted lining at $225 for moderately cold weather, and the Heavy Weight with 400-gram quilted lining at $245 for cold temperatures, wind, and snow.
What sizes does it come in, and how do I measure my horse?
Stock sizes are 72, 74, 76, 78, 80, and 82, with smaller or larger sizes available by special order (made and shipped in about 14-16 days). Measure from the center of the horse's chest along the side of the ribs to the end of the buttocks. The separate yoke comes in Narrow (9-11"), Regular (12-14"), and Wide (15-17") chest sizes, measured point of shoulder to point of shoulder.
Can the blanket fit a horse with an unusual neck set or narrow chest?
Yes, that is the point of the adjustable design. The patented separate yoke lets you raise or lower the neck using stainless steel thumb snaps, and yokes come in Small, Medium, and Wide widths. One owner with a high-headed, narrow-chested 16.2h Tennessee Walking Horse was finally able to get a proper fit by ordering a size 80 with a narrow yoke.
Does Yukon make anything besides blankets?
Yes, they also make the Yukon Quick Fit Halter™, a leading halter designed for barns that move horses to and from turnout. It goes over the head and secures with a pull of the lead rope in under two seconds and slides off in about one second. It comes in five colors and four sizes (Horse, Cobb, Pony, and Draft) and runs $25-$40 depending on size.
Where are Yukon Freedom Fit™ products made, and how do I order?
All Yukon products are proudly made in Ohio, USA, designed by creator and longtime horsewoman Pam Heintz. To order a blanket or a Quick Fit Halter™, visit https://yukonfreedomfit.com/, email info@YukonFF.com, or call 855-FIT-PONY (855-348-7669).
What is the Yukon Freedom Fit blanket?
It is a patented waterproof turnout blanket for horses, designed and patented by Pam Heintz. Its signature is a shoulder system built from three patented features — a Yoke Front, an Angular Gusset, and Sliding Connectors — that let the blanket move with the horse's neck, chest and shoulders rather than binding or rubbing. It is sold in three fill weights at yukonfreedomfit.com.
What are the three patented features of the blanket?
The patented Yoke Front sits over the chest and adjusts the neckline through D-rings and stainless steel thumbsnaps. The patented Angular Gusset is cut to follow the angle of the horse's shoulder for natural movement. The patented Sliding Connectors allow the front of the blanket to slide with the horse so it does not pinch or restrict the shoulders and chest.
What weights does the Yukon Freedom Fit blanket come in?
Three. The Unlined Turnout is a waterproof shell suited to rainy, milder days; the Medium Weight has a 200-gram quilted lining; and the Heavy Weight has a 400-gram quilted lining that adds warmth without restricting movement. All three weights use the same patented yoke, gusset and sliding-connector front.
How much does a Yukon Freedom Fit blanket cost?
On the company's website, the Unlined Turnout is listed at $195.00, the Medium Weight at $225.00, and the Heavy Weight at $245.00 to $250.00. The site advertises FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING within the United States.
What sizes and chest widths are available?
Each blanket is offered in sizes 72, 74, 76, 78, 80 and 82. There are also three chest-width options to dial in the fit: Narrow (8"–10"), Regular (11"–13") and Wide (14"–17"). The adjustable yoke itself comes in three widths — Small, Medium and Wide.
What colors does the blanket come in?
The Yukon Freedom Fit turnout blanket is available in Hunter Green, Navy Blue, Royal Blue and Red across the Unlined, Medium and Heavy weights.
Who invented the Yukon Freedom Fit blanket?
Pam Heintz, a British Horse Society Instructor and former Instructor and Director for the Dayton Area Pony Club. She grew up in Trotwood, Ohio, near Dayton, and is also a creative seamstress who sews clothing, wedding and prom dresses, and dog coats. She designed and patented the blanket after years of fighting shoulder rubs on her own show horse.
How did the design come about?
Every winter Pam's show horse developed a rubbed spot on its left shoulder no matter what blanket it wore. In the winter of 2016, while un-blanketing the horse, an idea struck "like lightning" — an angled shoulder gusset to follow the shoulder's slope plus a Y-shaped yoke over the chest with sliding connection points to relieve pressure. After many mock-ups, prototypes and manufacturing trials, the patented turnout blanket reached the market.
Where is the Yukon Freedom Fit blanket made?
It is sewn at a small, American-owned sewing company in southern Ohio. The company states its products are 100% manufactured in the USA by American citizen employees and describes itself as an "America First company."
What hardware does the blanket use?
The blankets use heavy-duty stainless steel snaps and D-rings throughout, including on the adjustable yoke. The leg straps are adjustable, non-elastic web straps that can be easily replaced if needed, and there is a single girth surcingle positioned right behind the front legs.
Does the blanket have a tail flap?
Yes. The Yukon Freedom Fit turnout blanket includes a large tail flap that protects against wind whipping up under the blanket while the horse is turned out.
How do I know if my horse's current blanket is too tight at the shoulders?
Yukon advises that your eyes will tell you — look for the blanket pinching at the shoulders or neck. Signs of a blanket restricting natural shoulder movement include coat rubs, shoulder rubs, and skin abrasion, especially on the shoulders and chest. The Freedom Fit yoke-and-gusset design is built specifically to relieve those pressure points.
What other products does Yukon Freedom Fit sell?
Besides the blanket, the company offers the Yukon Quick Fit Halter ($25.00–$40.00), Quick Connect Leather Reins with Pebble Grip Rubber ($70.00–$85.00), Quick Connect BioThane Reins ($40.00–$55.00), the Quick Fit Connect Leather Cheek Piece ($30.00), and the Dixie Midnight No-Sweat Vent Saddle Pad in Original ($220.00–$235.00) and ENDURO ($175.00–$220.00) versions.
What sizes and colors does the Yukon Quick Fit Halter come in?
The Quick Fit Halter is offered in Red, Royal Blue, Green and Black, priced from $25.00 to $40.00. Sizes run 25" (Pony), 31" (Cobb), 38" (Horse) and 48" (Draft).
How do I order or contact Yukon Freedom Fit?
Orders are placed directly at yukonfreedomfit.com, which advertises free domestic shipping in the U.S. For questions you can call 855-FIT-PONY (855-348-7669) or email info@YukonFF.com. The company is based in the Clayton/Dayton, Ohio area.
Why does the angled gusset matter compared with a standard turnout blanket?
A standard blanket runs its shoulder seam more or less straight, which can cut across the horse's diagonal shoulder muscles and cause rubbing and restricted stride. Yukon's patented Angular Gusset is cut to follow the actual angle of the shoulder, and the Sliding Connectors let the chest panel travel with the horse — together they give the shoulder room to move, which is the design's whole purpose in preventing the rubs Pam Heintz set out to eliminate.
