At last, a product that protects, and supports treatment of the eye ...the Equine Sun Visor... by THE EQUINE COMPANY

How The Equine Sun Visor Came To Be...

Dale & Yvonne Cates invented the Equine Sun Visor® when their Tovero Paint foal, Indy, presented them with eye and skin sensitivity issues never encountered with their other horses. Their longtime equine veterinarian warned them that Indy's lack of pigmentation around his blue eye and face would make him more susceptible to suffer problems, including cancer, if not protected from the sun. They tried traditional fly masks for coverage but found the protection they offered was not enough. Unable to find a satisfactory product on the market, they designed and created their own. With input from their equine veterinarian, a lot of thought, work, and many fitting trials, the Equine Sun Visor®was developed. Almost immediately other horse owners were asking if one could be made for their horse too. Dandy Products was formed and the rest, as they say, is history. The Equine Sun Visor® now has loyal customers throughout the United States and Canada.

What exactly is the Equine Sun Visor?

The Equine Sun Visor (ESV) is a patented, made-in-USA UV-protection fly mask engineered to shield a horse's eyes and the sensitive soft tissue around them from harmful solar radiation. The visor itself delivers an industry-leading 99.9% direct UV block to the eyes, while a specialized mesh adds additional protection across the rest of the face. Beyond sun defense, the mask doubles as a rain umbrella and keeps out dust, wind, flies, and biting insects. More than 10,000 customers worldwide now ride and turn out behind an ESV.

Who designs and ships these masks?

The company was founded in 2009 by Yvonne and Dale Cates after they purchased a paint foal with substantial white hair and pink skin, and their veterinarian warned that the horse faced a high risk of eye and skin cancers without UV protection. Unable to find a mask that worked, they designed their own with veterinary guidance, and word-of-mouth from friends turned it into a business. In October 2021 the Equine Sun Visor was purchased by The Equine Company, based in Ohio, which now manufactures and ships every mask itself as the sole supplier. The ESV line has earned the favor of equine ophthalmologists and veterinarians in the USA and around the world.

How does the visor and mesh actually block UV?

Each mask pairs a solid sewn visor that casts a deep shade with a precision-rated mesh screen. On the standard ESV the visor blocks 99.9% of direct UV while the gray mesh blocks up to roughly 80%; the ESV Plus steps up to Textilene 90 mesh rated to about 90%; and the ESV Maxx combines the 99.9% under-visor block with a lab-rated 95% UV block through its mesh. Every mask is hand-sewn and made to order, secured with a throat latch (single on the ESV, double on the Plus and Maxx) for a stable, comfortable fit that still lets the horse see clearly.

Which horses and conditions benefit most?

The ESV is designed for any horse with blue eyes, little facial pigment, or pink skin, all of which raise the risk of sun damage. Veterinarians and owners use it as supportive care for Equine Recurrent Uveitis, Equine Head Shaker's Syndrome, conjunctivitis, ocular and eyelid cancer, post-surgical and post-dilation recovery, weepy eyes, and general photosensitivity. The ESV Maxx was introduced in 2013 specifically after a customer's horse with Head Shaker's Syndrome needed maximum coverage.

Choosing between ESV, ESV Plus, and ESV Maxx
The standard ESV ($69.95 – $99.95) comes as a Blue Visor with Gray Mesh and a single throat latch. The ESV Plus ($79.95 – $139.95) features a Black Visor with Gray Mesh, Textilene 90 mesh, a double throat latch, and optional add-ons including a nose cover and Merino sheepskin edging. The ESV Maxx ($99.95 – $169.95) is the maximum-coverage model with a charcoal visor, gray mesh, double throat latch, the highest mesh UV rating, and the same nose-cover and sheepskin-edging options. All three are offered in Large Pony/POA, Arabian/Cob, Average, Thoroughbred, Large, and Standard Warmblood sizes with single-opening, two-ear-opening, or ear-cover configurations.

What is the Equine Sun Visor and what does it protect against?
The Equine Sun Visor (ESV) is a patented UV-protection fly mask for horses. The visor blocks 99.9% of direct UV to the eyes and the surrounding soft tissue, and the mesh adds further coverage across the face. It also shields the horse from dust, wind, flies, and other insects, and can even serve as a rain umbrella.
Who makes the Equine Sun Visor?
The masks are designed, manufactured, and shipped by The Equine Company in Ohio, USA. The brand was founded in 2009 by Yvonne and Dale Cates and was purchased by The Equine Company in October 2021. The company is the sole supplier of its masks, all of which are hand-sewn and made to order in the USA.
Why was the Equine Sun Visor originally created?
The founders purchased a paint foal with substantial white hair and pink skin, and their veterinarian warned the horse was at high risk for eye and skin cancers without UV protection. Unable to find a suitable mask on the market, they designed their own with veterinary guidance. Friends began requesting masks for their own horses, which launched the business.
What is the difference between the ESV, ESV Plus, and ESV MAXX?
The standard ESV ($69.95 – $99.95) has a blue visor, gray mesh, and a single throat latch. The ESV Plus ($79.95 – $139.95) has a black visor, Textilene 90 mesh rated to about 90% UV block, a double throat latch, and optional nose cover and sheepskin edging. The ESV MAXX ($99.95 – $169.95) is the maximum-coverage model with a charcoal visor, double throat latch, a lab-rated 95% UV block through the mesh, and the same optional add-ons.
How much UV does each mask actually block?
All three models block 99.9% of direct UV under the solid visor. The mesh rating varies by model: the standard ESV mesh blocks up to about 80%, the ESV Plus uses Textilene 90 mesh rated to about 90%, and the ESV MAXX delivers a lab-rated 95% UV block through its mesh design.
What sizes does the Equine Sun Visor come in?
Each model is offered in Large Pony/POA, Arabian/Cob, Average, Thoroughbred, Large, and Standard Warmblood. The company recommends using its online Measuring/Sizing chart to choose the right size. Draft and Miniature sizes are no longer made because those horses' head sizes vary too widely.
What ear options are available?
Every model can be ordered with a Single Opening, 2 Ear Openings, or Ear Covers. This lets owners match the mask to their horse's preference and to the level of coverage they need. The ear configuration is selected at the time of order since each mask is made to order.
Which conditions does the Equine Sun Visor help with?
It is used as supportive care for Equine Recurrent Uveitis, Equine Head Shaker's Syndrome, conjunctivitis, ocular and eyelid cancer, post-surgical and post-dilation recovery, weepy eyes, and general photosensitivity. It is especially recommended for horses with blue eyes, little facial pigment, or pink skin, which are most vulnerable to sun damage. The ESV MAXX was developed in 2013 specifically for a horse with Head Shaker's Syndrome.
Can my horse see clearly through the mask?
Yes. The mask is built so the horse retains good visibility through the mesh while still being protected from direct UV rays. Customers consistently report a comfortable fit that allows their horses to graze, work, and move normally. The visor provides shade without obstructing the horse's field of view.
What is the mask made of?
Each mask pairs a solid sewn visor with a UV-rated mesh screen, and every mask is hand-sewn. The ESV Plus and ESV MAXX use Textilene-style mesh and offer optional Merino sheepskin edging around the under-perimeter and noseband for added comfort. The masks are durable enough to be worn year-round and to withstand vigorous turnout.
Can I add a nose cover or sheepskin edging?
A nose cover and Merino sheepskin edging are available as optional upgrades on the ESV Plus and ESV MAXX models. The standard ESV cannot accommodate a nose cover or sheepskin edging, so owners who want those features should choose the Plus or MAXX. All options are selected at the time of order since masks are made to order.
How do I wash and care for the mask?
The company recommends washing the mask by hand to protect the mesh and the hand-sewn stitching. Avoiding machine washing helps the visor and mesh keep their shape and UV-blocking properties. With proper hand-washing care, owners report the masks last through extended seasonal use.
Where does Equine Sun Visor ship, and how fast?
The company ships to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. It advertises free worldwide express shipping with an estimated 1-4 day delivery window. Because every mask is made to order, processing time is factored in before shipment.
What is the return and exchange policy?
Equine Sun Visor offers free, hassle-free exchanges if a size or fit needs to be adjusted. Customers are directed to the Return Policy page on the website for full details. Since masks are made to order, reaching out through the Contact Us page with sizing questions before ordering is encouraged.
Are the masks ready-to-ship or made to order?
All Equine Sun Visor masks are made to order in the company's standard sizes and configurations. The company no longer sells ready-to-go masks. Custom one-off masks outside the standard size and feature set are not offered, but the range of sizes, ear options, and add-ons covers most needs.
How do I contact Equine Sun Visor?
You can reach the company by email at [email protected] or by phone at 937-510-5810. The brand is also active on social media via Facebook (facebook.com/EquineSunVisor), Instagram (@equinesunvisor_), and YouTube (@EquineSunVisor). Orders are placed directly through equinesunvisor.com.
Is the Equine Sun Visor recommended by veterinarians?
Yes. The ESV family of products has earned the favor of many equine ophthalmologists and veterinarians in the USA and around the world. The masks were originally designed with veterinary guidance, and they are frequently recommended as part of treatment plans for horses with uveitis, head shaker's syndrome, and ocular cancers. The brand has served over 10,000 customers worldwide since 2009.
