How The Equine Sun Visor Came To Be...

Dale & Yvonne Cates invented the Equine Sun Visor® when their Tovero Paint foal, Indy, presented them with eye and skin sensitivity issues never encountered with their other horses. What exactly is the Equine Sun Visor?

The Equine Sun Visor (ESV) is a patented, made-in-USA UV-protection fly mask engineered to shield a horse's eyes and the sensitive soft tissue around them from harmful solar radiation. The visor itself delivers an industry-leading 99.9% direct UV block to the eyes, while a specialized mesh adds additional protection across the rest of the face. Beyond sun defense, the mask doubles as a rain umbrella and keeps out dust, wind, flies, and biting insects. More than 10,000 customers worldwide now ride and turn out behind an ESV.

Who designs and ships these masks?

The company was founded in 2009 by Yvonne and Dale Cates after they purchased a paint foal with substantial white hair and pink skin, and their veterinarian warned that the horse faced a high risk of eye and skin cancers without UV protection. Unable to find a mask that worked, they designed their own with veterinary guidance, and word-of-mouth from friends turned it into a business. In October 2021 the Equine Sun Visor was purchased by The Equine Company, based in Ohio, which now manufactures and ships every mask itself as the sole supplier. The ESV line has earned the favor of equine ophthalmologists and veterinarians in the USA and around the world.

How does the visor and mesh actually block UV?

Each mask pairs a solid sewn visor that casts a deep shade with a precision-rated mesh screen. On the standard ESV the visor blocks 99.9% of direct UV while the gray mesh blocks up to roughly 80%; the ESV Plus steps up to Textilene 90 mesh rated to about 90%; and the ESV Maxx combines the 99.9% under-visor block with a lab-rated 95% UV block through its mesh. Every mask is hand-sewn and made to order, secured with a throat latch (single on the ESV, double on the Plus and Maxx) for a stable, comfortable fit that still lets the horse see clearly.

Which horses and conditions benefit most?

The ESV is designed for any horse with blue eyes, little facial pigment, or pink skin, all of which raise the risk of sun damage. Veterinarians and owners use it as supportive care for Equine Recurrent Uveitis, Equine Head Shaker's Syndrome, conjunctivitis, ocular and eyelid cancer, post-surgical and post-dilation recovery, weepy eyes, and general photosensitivity. The ESV Maxx was introduced in 2013 specifically after a customer's horse with Head Shaker's Syndrome needed maximum coverage.
