What are Lucas Equine custom barn windows?

Lucas Equine Equipment builds made-to-order barn windows engineered to bring ventilation and natural light into horse stalls and stable aisles. Each window is custom-manufactured to fit an existing opening, so it integrates cleanly with both new construction and renovations. Lucas notes that a barn window is typically a more economical choice than adding an exterior door while still delivering daylight and fresh air right at the stall.

Who manufactures these windows?

Lucas Equine Equipment was established in 1981 when Dana E. Looker purchased a paddock-gate business from Mr. Lucas in Cynthiana, Kentucky, starting as a three-man welding shop. The company has since grown into a nearly 70,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and operates under the banner "Made in Kentucky. Trusted in 40+ countries." Every window is fabricated in-house alongside their stall fronts, doors, gates, and grills.

How are the windows built?

Lucas barn windows are constructed with a seamless steel frame and mounted on a stainless steel continuous hinge for long-term durability under daily use. The design opens a full 180 degrees, swinging flat against the wall for maximum airflow on warm days and easy closure when the weather turns. Windows can be ordered with or without glass depending on your climate and how you plan to use the opening.

Which styles and finishes are available?

Because each unit is custom, windows can be made in virtually any style to match the architecture of the barn, including arched tops, grid and X-brace patterns, casement and sliding configurations, and barred grill options. Finish choices span a broad color palette seen across their work, including white, black, green, barn red, teal, and natural wood tones. Lucas backs the catalog with in-house coatings specialists, so the powder-coat finish is applied under the same roof as the fabrication.

Who are these windows designed for?

Lucas Equine serves barn owners, architects, designers, and builders worldwide, supplying clients across all 50 states and dozens of countries. Whether the project is a single private stable or a large multi-barn equestrian facility, the company offers pre-construction consultations, full CAD drawings, and logistics support to get the right window to the right opening. They can also coordinate optional integration of water, lighting, and electrical systems on larger stall projects.

How do you order a custom window?

Lucas Equine Equipment is located at 4161 US Highway 27 South, Cynthiana, KY 41031, and can be reached. Customers typically begin with a consultation and CAD rendering so dimensions, style, glass options, and finish color are confirmed before fabrication. The team's design and logistics staff then guide the order from drawing through manufacturing to delivery and installation.

The Solution Section (FAQ)
What is Lucas Equine Equipment's history?

The company takes its name from Mr. Lucas, who started a company in Cynthiana, Kentucky, building paddock gates for the local horse farms in nearby Lexington. In 1981, Dana Looker purchased the business with a three-man welding shop and set out to provide custom-manufactured gates, doors, and grills. Today, after more than 42 years, Lucas Equine Equipment runs a 70,000-square-foot facility with 31 full-time employees serving horse farms across the country.

What benefits do exterior windows bring to a barn?

Exterior windows are a relatively low-cost way to upgrade a barn. Per Lucas Equine, the practical benefits include: natural light in each stall, airflow when opened, optional with-or-without glass depending on climate, and the ability to match any architectural style. Lucas Equine windows open 180 degrees for maximum airflow — useful in summer heat and for ventilating after a clean-out.

What does "pre-hung" mean and why does it matter?

Pre-hung means the window or door arrives onsite pre-welded, powder coated, and ready to install. Lucas Equine builds every window and Dutch door to your exact specifications using a bold 2" × 4" tube frame for strength. For your contractor, pre-hung dramatically simplifies the install — no field-fabrication is needed; the unit drops into the prepared opening.

Why are stainless-steel continuous hinges a big deal?

Lucas Equine windows and Dutch doors come standard with a fully continuous stainless-steel hinge — and stainless is the meaningful detail. Most other manufacturers use inexpensive greaseable hinges that, if not maintained, seize and render the unit useless. Stainless-steel continuous hinges are maintenance-free — one less barn chore, and one less thing to fail in 5 or 10 years. Dutch doors also include a two-way operating latch, useful in emergencies and convenient day-to-day.

What about Dutch doors and stall fronts?

Dutch doors are a Lucas Equine specialty alongside the windows. Options include tempered glass, wood fill, and steel fill — same 2" × 4" tube frame, same stainless-steel continuous hinge, same pre-hung delivery. Beyond doors, Lucas Equine builds High Stall Fronts, Low Stall Fronts, and built-in stall systems — all custom to your specifications. The online StallBuilder™ App lets you preview 14 different stall front styles live, with pricing and digital renderings.

How do I think about partition design?

Per Lucas Equine, three considerations should drive partition design: the temperament of your horses (do they get along? bite? need separation?), the primary use of the stalls (foaling, layup, show, breeding), and the climate in your area. Partitions are always built to exact specifications. Custom touches go up to etching your farm logo into tempered glass for the most visible windows.

What does the order process look like?

The Lucas Equine process is phone call → design → quote → deposit → shop drawings → build → ship → local install. The Design Expert will start with questions about stall count, horse types, budget, and any photo-gallery designs you've gravitated to. After design and quote, a signed proposal and 25% deposit release shop drawings; the balance is COD or prior to shipping. Shop drawings are revised until you approve, then build begins. Shipping comes to your farm; your local contractor unloads the truck and installs from the supplied drawings, with Lucas Equine on-call throughout.

How do I reach Lucas Equine Equipment?

Visit lucasequine.com and call the helpful staff to start. The team will ask about stall count, horse types, budget, and design direction, and will work hard to land your dream — whether that's a budget-friendly 4-to-6-stall barn built to last, or one of the LUXURY BARNS featured in Stable Style Magazine. The Photo Gallery and StallBuilder™ App on the website are good places to start gathering inspiration before the call.

What is a Lucas Equine custom barn window?
It is a made-to-order window manufactured by Lucas Equine Equipment to bring ventilation and natural light into horse stalls and stable aisles. Each unit is custom-built to fit an existing opening and can be styled to match the barn's architecture. Lucas fabricates these windows in-house alongside its stall fronts, doors, gates, and grills.
What materials are Lucas Equine barn windows made from?
The windows use a seamless steel frame for strength and a stainless steel continuous hinge for long-term durability. The all-steel construction is built to withstand decades of daily use in a barn environment. Finishes are applied by Lucas Equine's in-house coatings specialists.
How far do the windows open?
Lucas Equine barn windows are engineered to open a full 180 degrees. This lets the window swing flat against the wall, delivering maximum airflow into the stall on warm days. When closed, they seal the opening to keep weather out.
Can the windows be ordered with or without glass?
Yes. Lucas Equine offers the windows with or without glass depending on your climate and how you intend to use the opening. In milder climates many owners choose an open or grilled window for airflow, while glass can be added where weather protection is needed.
What styles of barn windows are available?
Because every window is custom, Lucas Equine can build virtually any style to match the barn, including arched tops, grid and X-brace patterns, casement and sliding configurations, and barred grill options. The gallery on their site shows dozens of distinct examples. The team will work from your design or help develop one during consultation.
What colors and finishes can I choose?
Lucas Equine offers a broad color palette, with finishes seen across their work including white, black, green, barn red, teal, and natural wood tones. Coatings are applied in-house by their own specialists for a consistent, durable result. Because the work is custom, color is confirmed before fabrication.
Why choose a window instead of an exterior door?
Lucas Equine notes that a barn window is typically less expensive than an exterior stall door while still providing natural lighting and ventilation. A window delivers daylight and fresh air directly at the stall without the cost and framing of a full door opening. It is a practical way to improve a stall's comfort and brightness.
Where is Lucas Equine Equipment located?
The company is located at 4161 US Highway 27 South, Cynthiana, KY 41031. All manufacturing is done at their nearly 70,000-square-foot facility in Kentucky. They ship their products to clients across all 50 states and dozens of countries.
How do I contact Lucas Equine Equipment?
You can reach Lucas Equine Equipment by phone at 859-234-6920. Their facility and offices are at 4161 US Highway 27 South, Cynthiana, KY 41031. The team handles consultations, CAD drawings, manufacturing, and logistics for custom orders.
Who founded Lucas Equine Equipment and when?
The company was established in 1981 when Dana E. Looker purchased a paddock-gate business from Mr. Lucas in Cynthiana, Kentucky. It began as a three-man welding shop with a goal of providing quality custom-manufactured gates, doors, and grills to the local market. It has since grown into a globally recognized manufacturer.
Are the windows custom-sized to my barn?
Yes. Lucas Equine barn windows are made to order and fitted to your existing opening rather than sold as fixed off-the-shelf sizes. This lets them work with both new construction and renovation projects. Dimensions are confirmed before fabrication, often with a CAD rendering.
Does Lucas Equine provide design help before I order?
Yes. The company offers pre-construction consultations and full CAD drawings so style, dimensions, glass options, and finish are confirmed before manufacturing begins. They have logistics support to coordinate delivery. This design-first process helps the finished window fit and look exactly as planned.
Who typically buys Lucas Equine barn windows?
Lucas Equine serves barn owners, architects, designers, and builders, from single private stables to large multi-barn equestrian facilities. Their products are trusted by clients in over 40 countries. The custom approach scales from one window to a full barn outfitting.
What other products does Lucas Equine make besides windows?
Beyond barn windows, Lucas Equine manufactures custom stall fronts (high and low), stall doors and grills, partitions and screens, exterior and Dutch stall doors, mini stall systems, aisle entry doors, entrance and paddock gates, crosshatch mesh, and railing. They also offer specialty items. Everything is custom-fabricated at their Kentucky facility.
Does the hardware hold up to daily barn use?
Lucas Equine emphasizes durability, using a stainless steel continuous hinge and seamless steel frame so the window withstands decades of daily use. Stainless hardware resists the corrosion common in damp, ammonia-rich barn environments. The company is known for smooth-operating, long-lasting hardware across its product lines.
Can the windows match my existing stall fronts and doors?
Yes. Because Lucas Equine builds windows, stall fronts, doors, and gates in the same shop using the same custom process, the window can be matched in style, grill pattern, and finish color to the rest of your barn. Their in-house coatings ensure color consistency across components. This makes a window an easy add to an existing Lucas Equine stall system.
How long has Lucas Equine been making barn equipment?
Lucas Equine Equipment has been building custom horse stalls, doors, windows, and stable equipment since 1981, well over 40 years. A new facility was built in 1995 with a second building added in 2000 as the company expanded. That experience underpins the quality and craftsmanship of their custom windows.
