SynOsteon
Healthy bone requires a collagen matrix for flexibility as well as a support medium for calcium and phosphorus deposition. SynOsteonis formulated to support the development of a healthy frame for healthy bone. Nutrients such as choline, inositol and silicon are key in building and maintaining collagen, while menaquinone (vitamin K2) and β-glucans stimulate calcium deposition in bone. Vitamin D is necessary for nutritional calcium absorption. Icariins from Herba epimedii (epimedium) limit osteoclastic bone resorption and promote osteoblast activity. SynOsteon is also a rich source of calcium and magnesium.

SynOsteon Maintenance

When bone-fit horses have extended periods of rest they start reabsorbing calcium from their bones. They can start reabsorbing significant calcium in only a few weeks. This bone resorption can lead to very serious humeral and tibial stress fractures when training is resumed. SynOsteon Maintenance is formulated to inhibit osteoclast activity and stimulate osteoblast activity so healthy bone density is maintained during these periods of rest.

What Horses Need SynOsteon Maintenance?

• Bone fit horses entering periods of rest exceeding three weeks • Resting horses should take Synosteon Maintenance until they resume galloping.

SynOsteon Was Developed to Help Manage Bucked Shins and Stress Fractures of the Shins, Tibia and Humerus. Bucked shins and stress fractures of the shin, tibia and humerus have plagued racehorses and racehorse trainers for many years. During the months of rigorous training a racehorse needs to achieve racing fitness, the stress cycling of the long bones often overcomes the body’s ability to remodel, resulting in bucked shins, tibial stress fractures and humeral stress fractures. These injuries are not only dangerous to the racehorse, they also cause a significant economic burden to the owner and trainer. SynOsteon contains a unique blend of nutrients to support strong, healthy bone development.

Healthy bone requires a collagen matrix for flexibility as well as a support medium for calcium and phosphorus deposition. SynOsteonTM Was Designed for These Three Types of Horse Populations

  1. Young unfit racehorses in early training. These horses should be supplemented daily when they begin training and continue through the time they are racing at full distance. In a population of more than 100 two and three-year-olds in the first year that SynOsteon was available, none stopped training for bucked shins, tibial stress fractures or humeral stress fractures.
  2. Racehorses that have had significant time out of training (over one month) that were not supplemented with SOM (SynOsteon Maintenance). The longer fit horses are out of training the more calcium phosphate they resorb from their bones. This is the reason for the all too common tibial and humeral stress fractures that develop during the retraining phase after horses have been turned out. By supplementing these horses when they begin training fractures of the tibia and humerus can be avoided.
  3. Racehorses that have developed bucked shins, tibial or humeral stress fractures. For all of these conditions it is important for your veterinarian to evaluate radiographs to know if there is a cortical fracture or just a callus. With shins the protocol is generally to walk for a few weeks, jog for a few weeks and resume normal training. For most bucked shin cases no other therapy is needed, although shock wave therapy is often used. For the tibia and humerus without a visible fracture the protocol is to walk until the horse is sound at the trot (~2weeks), then one more week. Jog a few weeks and if sound start gradually introducing gallops. Cortical fractures will require more walking but these average about 5.5 months to the first start back. This is a general protocol and should be adjusted by an experienced veterinarian to fit the individual racehorse’s condition.

What problem do SynOsteon and SynOsteon Maintenance solve?

SynOsteon™ Healthy Bone and SynOsteon Maintenance are a two-product bone-health system built for the performance and racing horse. SynOsteon Healthy Bone was developed to help manage bucked shins and the stress fractures of the shin, tibia and humerus that plague racehorses during the months of rigorous training needed to reach racing fitness. SynOsteon Maintenance is the companion product that aids in maintaining mature, healthy bone during extended periods of rest, when a bone-fit horse can begin resorbing significant calcium from its skeleton in just a few weeks. Used together, they protect the skeleton through the full training-and-turnout cycle.

Who makes SynOsteon?

SynOsteon is made by SynNutra Equine (SynNutra, Inc.), a California company that formulates, develops and tests its products in its own facility so clients receive supplements they can trust every time. The founder, Dr. Edwin Simpson, is a practicing veterinarian who has been involved in the thoroughbred racing industry for more than 20 years; horses in his care have won countless races, including numerous Breeder's Cup and Triple Crown races. Recognizing the need for an alternative to anabolic steroids, Dr. Simpson developed a formula that improved the quality and speed of healing in his patients' bone and soft-tissue injuries, drawing on his background in biochemistry and pharmacology.

What is inside the formula?

SynNutra Equine products never include drugs of any kind; they are all-natural, field-tested herbal ingredients and endogenous nutrients the company calls Synergistic Nutraceuticals. SynOsteon Healthy Bone combines choline, inositol and silicon to build and maintain the collagen matrix bone needs for flexibility, while menaquinone (vitamin K2) and beta-glucans stimulate calcium deposition, vitamin D drives nutritional calcium absorption, and icariins from Herba epimedii (epimedium) limit osteoclastic bone resorption and promote osteoblast activity. It is also a rich source of calcium and magnesium. SynOsteon Maintenance delivers Vitamin D3 5000 IU (152% daily value) plus a 5.14g proprietary blend with Herba epimedii and Equisetum arvense, a natural source of silicon.

How does it work in the body?

Healthy bone requires both a collagen matrix for flexibility and a support medium for calcium and phosphorus deposition, and SynOsteon is formulated to support that healthy frame. The Maintenance formula is built specifically to inhibit osteoclast activity and stimulate osteoblast activity so bone density holds during rest, heading off the tibial and humeral stress fractures that so often appear during the retraining phase after a horse has been turned out. In a population of more than 100 two- and three-year-olds during SynOsteon's first year of availability, none stopped training for bucked shins, tibial stress fractures or humeral stress fractures.

Which horses is each product for?

SynOsteon Healthy Bone targets three populations: young, unfit racehorses in early training (supplemented daily from the start through racing at full distance); racehorses returning after significant time off that were not kept on SynOsteon Maintenance; and horses that have already developed bucked shins or tibial or humeral stress fractures. SynOsteon Maintenance is for bone-fit horses entering periods of rest exceeding three weeks, and resting horses should stay on it until they resume galloping. SynNutra recommends a veterinarian evaluate radiographs to confirm whether a finding is a cortical fracture or a callus before setting a return-to-work protocol.

How do you buy SynOsteon?

SynOsteon™ Healthy Bone is sold directly at synnutraequine.com, priced from $115.00 to $1,580.00, and is offered in two sizes — a 30-day supply for one horse or a 30-day supply for ten horses — with a subscribe-and-save option that takes 5% off. The company has roots firmly planted in equine veterinary medicine, and all products are formulated, developed, and tested in its own California facility.
What does SynOsteon do for a horse's bones?
SynOsteon is formulated to support the development of a healthy frame for healthy bone. Healthy bone needs a collagen matrix for flexibility plus a support medium for calcium and phosphorus deposition, and SynOsteon supplies nutrients like choline, inositol, and silicon to build collagen, with menaquinone (vitamin K2) and beta-glucans to stimulate calcium deposition. It also includes vitamin D for calcium absorption and is a rich source of calcium and magnesium.
Can a supplement help with bucked shins and stress fractures?
SynOsteon was developed to help manage bucked shins and stress fractures of the shins, tibia, and humerus. During rigorous training, the stress cycling of the long bones often overcomes the body's ability to remodel, leading to these injuries. SynOsteon contains a unique blend of nutrients to support strong, healthy bone development. In a population of more than 100 two- and three-year-olds in the first year SynOsteon was available, none stopped training for bucked shins, tibial, or humeral stress fractures.
Why do resting horses lose bone density, and what is SynOsteon Maintenance for?
When bone-fit horses have extended periods of rest, they start reabsorbing calcium from their bones, and can reabsorb significant calcium in only a few weeks. This bone resorption can lead to very serious humeral and tibial stress fractures once training resumes. SynOsteon Maintenance is formulated to inhibit osteoclast activity and stimulate osteoblast activity so healthy bone density is maintained during rest.
Which horses need SynOsteon Maintenance?
It is intended for bone-fit horses entering periods of rest exceeding three weeks. Resting horses should take SynOsteon Maintenance until they resume galloping. Keeping bone density up during downtime helps avoid the tibial and humeral stress fractures that commonly develop during the retraining phase after a horse has been turned out.
When should young racehorses start on SynOsteon?
Young, unfit racehorses in early training should be supplemented daily when they begin training and continue through the time they are racing at full distance. This covers the months of rigorous work needed to reach racing fitness, when long-bone stress is highest. SynOsteon supports bone remodeling through that demanding build-up period.
How does SynOsteon's approach differ from a drug-based product?
SynNutra Equine combines the benefits of both western science and eastern medicine after years of research and consultation with scientists, pharmacologists, and herbologists. The result is Synergistic Neutraceuticals, a synergistic combination of endogenous and herbal nutrients, with no drugs of any kind. For example, icariins from Herba epimedii (epimedium) limit osteoclastic bone resorption and promote osteoblast activity.

SynOsteon Maintenance aids in maintaining mature, healthy bone density during extended periods of rest.
Who makes SynOsteon?
SynOsteon is made by SynNutra Equine (SynNutra, Inc.), a California-based company committed to the research and development of effective products for performance-horse medical issues. The company formulates, develops and tests its products in its own California facility. Its products incorporate all-natural, field-tested herbal ingredients and endogenous nutrients rather than drugs of any kind.
Who founded SynNutra Equine?
The founder is Dr. Edwin Simpson, a practicing veterinarian who has been involved in the thoroughbred racing industry for more than 20 years. Horses in his care have won countless races, including numerous Breeder's Cup and Triple Crown races. Recognizing the need for alternatives to anabolic steroids, he developed a formula that improved the quality and speed of healing in his patients' bone and soft-tissue injuries, drawing on a strong background in biochemistry and pharmacology.
What is SynOsteon Healthy Bone formulated to do?
It was developed to help manage bucked shins and stress fractures of the shin, tibia and humerus, and to support bone development and repair, fracture healing, and healthy tendons and ligaments. Healthy bone requires both a collagen matrix for flexibility and a support medium for calcium and phosphorus deposition, and SynOsteon is formulated to support that healthy frame. It targets the bone stress that builds up during the rigorous training a racehorse needs to reach racing fitness.
What ingredients are in SynOsteon Healthy Bone?
It contains choline, inositol and silicon, which are key in building and maintaining collagen, plus menaquinone (vitamin K2) and beta-glucans that stimulate calcium deposition in bone. Vitamin D is included because it is necessary for nutritional calcium absorption, and icariins from Herba epimedii (epimedium) limit osteoclastic bone resorption while promoting osteoblast activity. SynOsteon is also a rich source of calcium and magnesium.
What is in SynOsteon Maintenance?
Its supplement facts list a serving size of one level scoop (5.2g) with 90 servings per container. Each serving provides Vitamin D3 5000 IU (152% daily value) plus a 5.14g proprietary blend that includes Herba epimedii and Equisetum arvense, which is a natural source of silicon. Percentage daily values are based on an average horse weight of 1000 lbs.
What is the difference between SynOsteon Healthy Bone and SynOsteon Maintenance?
SynOsteon Healthy Bone is the active product used during training to support bone development, manage bucked shins and stress fractures, and aid fracture healing. SynOsteon Maintenance is for bone-fit horses entering rest, formulated to inhibit osteoclast activity and stimulate osteoblast activity so bone density is preserved while the horse is idle. In short, Healthy Bone works while the horse is in work or healing, and Maintenance protects the skeleton during downtime.
Why do resting horses need SynOsteon Maintenance?
When bone-fit horses have extended periods of rest they start reabsorbing calcium from their bones, and they can begin resorbing significant calcium in only a few weeks. This bone loss can lead to very serious humeral and tibial stress fractures when training resumes. SynOsteon Maintenance is designed to maintain healthy bone density during these rest periods so the horse returns to work with a stronger skeleton.
Which horses should take SynOsteon Healthy Bone?
SynNutra designed it with three populations in mind: young, unfit racehorses in early training; racehorses returning after more than a month off that were not kept on SynOsteon Maintenance; and horses that have already developed bucked shins or tibial or humeral stress fractures. Young horses should be supplemented daily from the time they begin training through racing at full distance.
Does SynOsteon contain any drugs or steroids?
No. SynNutra Equine products never include drugs of any kind. They instead incorporate all-natural, field-tested herbal ingredients and endogenous nutrients that the company calls Synergistic Nutraceuticals, combining western science and eastern medicine. The line was specifically created as an alternative to anabolic steroids and other regulated pharmaceuticals in horse racing.
Is there evidence that SynOsteon works?
SynNutra reports that in a population of more than 100 two- and three-year-olds during SynOsteon's first year of availability, none stopped training for bucked shins, tibial stress fractures or humeral stress fractures. The formula draws on Dr. Simpson's clinical results treating bone and soft-tissue injuries in racehorses. As with any bone or fracture concern, the company stresses that a veterinarian should evaluate radiographs to guide the individual horse's program.
How much does SynOsteon Healthy Bone cost?
On the SynNutra Equine website, SynOsteon Healthy Bone is priced from $115.00 up to $1,580.00 depending on size. It is offered as a 30-day supply for one horse or a 30-day supply for ten horses. A subscribe-and-save option takes 5% off the order.
How is SynOsteon Healthy Bone packaged?
It is available in two sizes: a 30-day supply for one horse and a 30-day supply for ten horses, shipped in packaging with listed dimensions of 12 x 6 x 4 inches. SynOsteon is sold as a powdered top-dress supplement. SynOsteon Maintenance is supplied in containers of 90 servings at one level 5.2g scoop per serving.
What is a typical return-to-training protocol after bucked shins or a stress fracture?
SynNutra notes that for bucked shins the general protocol is to walk for a few weeks, jog for a few weeks, and resume normal training, with shock wave therapy sometimes used. For the tibia or humerus without a visible fracture, the protocol is to walk until the horse is sound at the trot (about two weeks), then one more week, jog a few weeks, and gradually reintroduce gallops. Cortical fractures require more walking and average about 5.5 months to the first start back; the company stresses this is a general guide to be adjusted by an experienced veterinarian.
