The Hoof Cinch™ Finally a safe, affordable and effective solution to the misery of Founder or Laminitis! What Is Chuck Potter, Inventor of The Hoof Cinch? ™ Chuck Potter is the owner/operator of Donkey Hill Farm Farrier Service. Chuck served in the military for 21 years, received two associate degrees, and did bodyguard work overseas before deciding to turn his attention to the farrier business. He attended the Minnesota School of Horseshoeing in 2004 and has been a full time farrier since. Specializing in corrective work, with a passion for helping laminitic horses led to an amazing discovery. He tried serveral other methods that worked fairly well but wanted an invention that would actually fix founder. His passion for excellence has led to the horses life changing Hoof Cinch. Will The Hoof Cinch™ Hurt My Horse? No! The Hoof Cinch™ was originally designed to relieve the pain caused by laminitis. The attachment screws do not penetrate the hoof wall into the sensitive structure so there is no pain caused by the attachment of The Hoof Cinch™.Can Anyone Apply The Hoof Cinch™?The Hoof Cinch™is designed to be applied by farriers, veterinarians, and the horse owners. We Highly recommend you have your farrier apply The Hoof Cinch™ because they know the structure of the hoof and how the bones of the hoof need to be aligned. Also, there are some recommended trimming specifications that your farrier will know best on how to apply. How Does The Hoof Cinch™ Work? When applied approximately one inch below the coronary band, The Hoof Cinch™ stabilizes the hoof wall. A common misconception is that the hoof is a rigid structure. That is not the case. Every time the horse steps on the hoof it is flexing. If the laminae are inflamed due to laminitis, that flexing causes the inflamed laminae to stretch, causing the pain in the hoof. The Hoof Cinch™ stops the hoof from flexing where the laminae are being stretched. When the hoof wall is stabilized with The Hoof Cinch™ the hoof wall is forced back towards the coffin bone. As the hoof grows down that force allows the horse to grow the rotation out of the hoof, realigning the coffin bone with the hoof wall. Can I Ride My Horse? If your horse is sound and walking fine, and not suffering from an acute laminitis episode you can ride your horse with The Hoof Cinch™ attached. How Long Do I Leave On The Hoof Cinch?™?For best results, we recommend The Hoof Cinch™ stay attached for 12-16 weeks. The Hoof Cinch™ does not need to be applied permanently. You do need to find the cause of the founder or laminitis so you can help prevent a relapse! Does Hoof Cinch?™ Really Work? The Hoof Cinch™ was tested for a year on almost 60 horses with varying degrees of founder. Old founder cases as well as horses with acute laminitis were treated as part of the testing of the product. Radiographs were taken before and after treatment and every subject showed either a reduction of coffin bone rotation or a complete elimination of the rotation. Are You Moving The Coffin Bone? No, once it is rotated the coffin bone cannot be moved back to its original position. The Hoof Cinch™ stabilizes the hoof wall and forces the hoof wall growth back toward the coffin bone. As the hoof wall grows down along the coffin bone, it realigns with the rotated coffin bone. In essence, since we cannot move the coffin bone back to the hoof wall we move the hoof wall back to the coffin bone allowing the horse to "grow out" of the rotation. What If My Horse Is Trimmed Using "Natural Methods", Can Hoof Cinch Still Work? The Hoof Cinch™ does not require any shoeing and so it is compatible with natural and barefoot trimming methods as well as the traditional farrier techniques. Is The Hoof Cinch ™ Easy To Apply?Yes! Any Farrier or Vet can do it and we have easy instructions to help. Our staff is always available for further help by phone if you need us.How Much Does Hoof Cinch?™ Cost? The real question is how much does the Hoof Cinch Save? The Hoof Cinch is only $60 per set with $5 shipping to anywhere in the USA. That is a very small cost indeed to affect the life and productivity of your horse. By bracing the capsule, it lifts the painful pressure off the laminae the moment it is applied, which is why owners and farriers report horses standing and walking more comfortably almost immediately. It is sold as a set of two and is designed to work with or without shoes. Chuck Potter, the inventor, describes the goal simply: "We are bringing the hoof back to normal."![]() Chuck Potter is the owner/operator of Donkey Hill Farm Farrier Service in Dakota, Minnesota, and a full-time farrier since attending the Minnesota School of Horseshoeing in 2004. Before farriery he served 21 years in the military, earned two associate degrees, and did bodyguard work overseas. His specialization in corrective work and his drive to actually fix founder, rather than just manage it, led him to develop The Hoof Cinch over a year of research alongside veterinarian Dr. Jan Doelle, DVM, of Fountain City, WI. ![]() How does The Hoof Cinch relieve founder pain? The Cinch reduces the stress on the laminae as the horse bears weight by acting as a brace on the hoof capsule. Because the rotated coffin bone itself cannot simply be repositioned, the device instead redirects the new growth of the hoof capsule back toward the coffin bone for a pain-free correction. As Potter puts it, "The Hoof Cinch stabilizes the hoof wall and forces the hoof wall growth back toward the coffin bone." Full correction typically runs 16 to 20 weeks, and with the right treatment for the underlying cause the Cinch carries roughly a 95% success rate.![]() Installation is fast and meant to be pain-free: the band is set about an inch below the coronary band, then fastened into the hoof wall with screws and attaching plates using a cordless drill and tightened so the capsule can no longer flex. The Hoof Cinch comes in three sizes to fit any equine: Mini/Pony (mini to 000), Standard (00 to 4), and Big Boy (5 and up). Extra screws are offered in 5/16" for Mini/Pony and 3/8" for Standard/Big Boy, with extra Hold Down Tabs available at $2.00 each.
