About Our Company

Ed James startedSSG Gloves 25 years ago to serve the unique needs of the harness horse driver. An owner of harness horses for the past 30 years, James says drivers started telling him they needed better gloves." You have to listen to what the customers want, and then you have to provide it for them," he says. "Listening the what the drivers were saying lead to the development of the first gloves we ever sold. They needed a glove that would keep their hands warm, but with out any bulk. They need flexibility."

The resounding success of that first glove spawned a sustained demand in the horse industry, where gloves were once considered almost an afterthought of the tack manufacturing business. Before long, SSG began developing gloves for the needs of other potential customers. Working with suppliers around the world, the SSG Glove range now features more than 60 styles to meet the unique needs of diverse disciplines, including show jumping, dressage, all event shows, eventing, rodeo, and polo. There is also a line of general work gloves that are at home on the trails, as well as working around the barn. SSG Gloves is international company with retailers around the world including U.S. , Canada, Ireland, the U.K., Europe, and Australia

What makes an SSG riding glove different?

SSG Riding Gloves builds gloves for one job: keeping a rider's hands connected to the reins with grip, feel, and durability that hold up season after season. The company offers more than 50 styles spanning hunter/jumper, dressage, eventing, polo, carriage driving, show, racing, roping, and pleasure riding, with warm-weather and cold-weather options and sizing from children's through adult. Each glove is engineered around the contact a rider needs, not built as a generic work glove with a riding label slapped on it.

Who founded SSG Riding Gloves?

Ed James founded SSG more than 30 years ago to solve a real problem: harness-horse drivers and jockeys kept telling him they needed a better glove. A longtime owner of harness horses, James worked directly with drivers and jockeys to develop racing gloves that found immediate success, then expanded the line across every riding discipline by listening to professional riders and responding to what they asked for. That feedback loop, built on "high quality, superior fit and excellent workmanship," still defines the brand today.

The proprietary materials behind the grip

SSG develops and trademarks its own performance materials so each glove matches its discipline. Digital® is described as "the ultimate in feel, grip, breathability and finally, durability," while Aquasuede® and Aquasuede Plus® deliver a "soft, colour-fast, sweat absorbing palm" that is breathable, durable, and washable. Cold-weather styles use Thinsulate® — "the warmest thin glove insulation available, even in damp conditions" — alongside Kevlar® for strength, plus Lycra®, Spandex, Neoprene, silk, and the exclusive Aquatack "skin-thin reinlock breathable palm for great grip."
