Finally! Mother Nature in a bag! Wild Fed horse feed is made from whole foods: grasses grains, seeds and herbs, all of which are a part of a horse’s natural diet

Our Story

I was inspired to create this feed because of my first love, my horse Shadow. He joined our family when we both were 10yrs old. Just before his 30th birthday his teeth were so worn down that he started choking on hay and was no longer able to hold his weight eating just hay. I needed to add calories with something easily digestible but also had a high nutrient value to support his aging body. The senior feeds on the market contained undesirable industry by-products such as peanut hulls, soybean meal, beet pulp, rice bran as well as sweeteners and synthetic nutrients.

I decided to create my own all natural horse feed for Shadow. At the time, I was in medical school studying to be a Naturopathic Physician which reinforced my belief in the healing power of nature. I felt that the key to designing an amazing feed would be to pay close attention to what horses would eat, left to their own devices. I spent hours with Shadow and my other horse Shya while they grazed in the pasture and observed the types of grasses and herbs they sought out.

This feed is designed to mimic how horses would naturally eat, hence the name Wild Fed. It is formulated for horses of any age young or old and meets the daily required nutritional needs. It can be used as a primary feed source or in addition to your feeding regimen to add easily digestible calories.

Although Shadow was no longer able to eat hay, he loved his Wild Fed Horse Feed which was his primary food source for over 5yrs. It kept him looking and feeling great until his recent passing at age 35. RIP Shadow thank you for being my inspiration.

What Are the Benefits of Wild Fed?

Wild Fed is a whole-foods based complete horse feed designed to mimic a horse’s natural diet. It is made from grasses, seeds and herbs; free of sweeteners, corn, soy and industry by-products. Wild Fed is enhanced with probiotics, and contains organic and non-GMO ingredients. This anti-inflammatory feed is naturally rich in omega 3’s from the chia seeds. Wild Fed is low in sugar and can be used with insulin resistant conditions as well as Cushing’s Disease. It is excellent for horses with bad teeth who have difficulty chewing hay. High in calories (1800 calories per pound), Wild Fed is very effective for horses who are underweight and/or expend a lot of calories for competition or strenuous activities.

How Is Wild Fed Different from Other Natural Feeds?

We believe horses naturally thrive on grasses, seeds, whole grains and herbs. Almost all feeds on the market today contain some type of industry by-products such as beet pulp, soy bean meal, peanut hulls, rice bran and molasses. We do not add these cheap fillers or sweeteners. The organic herbs used in Wild Fed are safe for daily and long term use. Many medicinal herbs like garlic and kelp are meant to be used short term and in specific situations, however, they are not beneficial for every horse and can be harmful if used long term.

So What Are The Ingredients?

We are so glad you asked! Non-GMO Orchard Grass Non-GMO Alfalfa and Non-GMO Timothy Grass, Non-GMO Oats, Sunflower Seeds, Chia Seeds, Organic Dandelion Leaf, Organic Rosehips, Organic Red Clover leaf and blossom, Organic Probiotic, Trace Mineral Salt, Organic Selenium Yeast, Organic Zinc Methionate and Natural Source Vitamin E.

Wild Fed Horse Feed is a whole foods based, complete feed made to mimic a horse’s natural diet. Made with Organic and Non- GMO ingredients.

Only $39.95 for a 40lb Bag

Note: Most horse feeds contain filler foods such as soybean hulls, peanut hulls, beet pulp and rice bran. These fillers foods are cheap and add bulk to the feed. Horses would never naturally eat these ingredients and they do not provide a balanced nutrient profile. Lacking the necessary nutrients, standard horse feeds will then have to add back in isolated synthetic vitamins and minerals to make it a balanced feed.

How Much Wild Fed Should I Feed My Horse?

The simple answer is that you can substitute it for the concentrate you are currently giving your horse starting with 15% to 20% and transitioning to 100% over the course of two weeks. Should your horse need to gain weight, start with 1-2 pounds, 1 to 2 times a day for mild weight gain, 3 to 5 pounds a day, 1 to 2 times a day for moderate weight gain and 6-10 pounds per day, 1 to 2 times a day for severely underweight horse. It is best given in divided doses. You never want to feed your horse more than 10 pounds at one serving. Wild Fed is suitable for any age horse. A small handful of our feed can be used as a base to mix in with supplements to mask an undesirable taste. Nine out of ten horses recommend Wild Fed for an anytime treat.

Can I Stop Giving Supplements to My Horse After I Start Feeding Wild Fed?

Wild Fed is not a supplement. It is a complete feed. For example, if your horse has been tested and you know it requires additional supplementation, it will gain additional nutrients from the Wild Fed, but not necessarily enough to compensate the deficiency.

Should I Consult with My Veterinarian Before Using Wild Fed?

Under most circumstances the answer is NO. However, if your horse is being treated for a specific medical condition, it’s always wise to consult with your Vet. Wild Fed is not appropriate for horses that are HYPP positive because it contains too much potassium from the sunflower seeds.

What Do Horse Owners Say About Wild Fed?

We started feeding Wild Fed about 6 months ago after having seen incredible results a friend had with her horse. More than half of the boarded horses & owner horses at In The Irons Farm are being fed Wild Fed. The changes in the horses has been noteworthy.Every horse loves it. The older horses flourish, keeping their shape & top lines, the competing horses have increased stamina & the young horses fill out through their bodies very nicely on this feed. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a healthy, palatable feed for their horse, no matter the age or discipline.

My Supreme Champion Welsh stallion Chaparral’s Te’ Quiero is now 26 years old. I was looking for a good feed to feed an older stallion without worrying about other ponies who might be insulin resistant (though he isn’t). My feed store La Cumbre Feed told me to try a sample of Wild Fed. He loved it. My husband Tom went to down to feed a brush him because I had been busy getting ready to work the Santa Barbara National Multi-Breed Show. TQ loved the brushing but was more anxious to get his Wild Fed. We loved it so much we put samples in our gift bag at the S.B. National (Multi-Breed) Welsh Show. Exhibitors were thrilled to receive it!! They have all given us names of their feed stores so they can get it closer to home.

I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your Wild Fed horse food. My 26 year old Arabian was unable to chew well and while I was gone for 5 weeks lost a huge amount of weight. I cried when I got home and saw him. It's been 3 months now that I've been giving him your Wild Fed and he looks amazing! Thank you so much. It's nice to have people like you in the world!” – Kathy Lively (Kathy & Alex live in Hood River, Oregon)

WOW WOW WOW! I had never seen an ingredient list like this and I have to say I am thrilled to have a feed that is so “natural”. It’s like a “secret garden” for my horse, filled with clover, chia seeds, dandelion and more. My horses Love it— and are looking Great. Every horse should be blessed to be a Wild Fed horse!

What exactly is Wild Fed Horse Feed?

Wild Fed Horse Feed is a whole-foods based, complete horse feed engineered to mimic a horse's natural diet rather than replace it with processed concentrates. It is built from grasses, grains, seeds, and herbs and is sold as a soft, steam-pelleted product the company describes as having a "Soft, Steam-Pelleted Texture" that is lightly steamed for digestibility. The pellets are formed under high pressure that releases steam to create a dehydrated product, so no chemical binders are needed to hold the ingredients together. A full 40 lb bag retails around $45.99, and a 1 lb Sample Bag is offered for $2.00 so owners can test palatability before committing.

How does the low-sugar, metabolic-safe formula work?
Because the feed contains no corn, soy, or added sweeteners, it carries a very low sugar and starch load, which the guaranteed analysis confirms: ESC (max) 8%, Starch (max) 2.6%, and NSC (max) 11%. The guaranteed analysis also lists Protein (min) 11.5%, Crude Fat (min) 3.8%, Calcium 0.40-0.95%, Phosphorus (min) 0.22%, Copper (min) 15 ppm, Zinc (min) 45 ppm, Selenium (min) 0.30 ppm, and Vitamin A (min) 7,000 IU/lb. An organic probiotic and a proprietary blend of organic herbs round out a recipe designed to nourish horses the way nature intended.

Which horses is Wild Fed designed for?

The feed is appropriate for horses of all ages and is specifically positioned for insulin-resistant horses, Cushing's horses, and senior horses thanks to its low-NSC, allergen-free profile. The brand was born from this exact need: founder Dr. Wellspring created it for her horse Shadow, who as he neared his 30th birthday had teeth "so worn down that he started choking on hay and was no longer able to hold his weight eating just hay." Shadow had shown signs of Cushing's, and after switching to Wild Fed those symptoms resolved; he thrived on the feed for over five years before passing at age 35. The soft pellets soak easily into a mash, making it well suited to hard keepers and horses with poor dentition.

How do you feed it and where can you buy it?

Feeding rates are flexible: roughly 0.5 to 2 lbs per day for general use, 2 to 4 lbs per day for weight gain, or as a complete feed at about 1.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight (max 10 lbs per meal). It can also serve as a treat, one cup, or two to four cups after exercise. Wild Fed is available online at wildfedhorse.com and through a growing network of local feed-store dealers found via the company's Dealer Locator. Who founded Wild Fed and what are their credentials?
Wild Fed was founded in 2014 by Dr. Samantha Wellspring, a Naturopathic Doctor and herbalist specializing in Gastroenterology, while she was attending medical school. She also founded the Botanical Studies Institute. Her father, Howard Johnson, joined as co-founder after retiring, contributing sales and manufacturing expertise.
What is the story of Shadow, the horse that inspired Wild Fed?
Shadow joined Dr. Wellspring's family when both she and the horse were ten years old. As he approached his 30th birthday his teeth were so worn down that he started choking on hay and could no longer hold his weight eating hay alone. Wellspring designed Wild Fed as a natural, easily digestible alternative to senior feeds that contained ingredients like peanut hulls and synthetic nutrients. Shadow had shown signs of Cushing's that resolved on the feed, and he thrived on Wild Fed for over five years before passing at age 35.
Is Wild Fed safe for horses with Cushing's or insulin resistance?
Yes. The feed is specifically suitable for insulin-resistant horses, Cushing's horses, and senior horses. Its guaranteed analysis lists very low sugar and starch values, with ESC at max 8%, Starch at max 2.6%, and NSC at max 11%. The absence of corn, soy, and sweeteners keeps the sugar load low for metabolic horses.
What is the guaranteed analysis of Wild Fed Horse Feed?
The label lists Protein (min) 11.5%, Crude Fat (min) 3.8%, Calcium 0.40-0.95%, Phosphorus (min) 0.22%, Salt (max) 0.50%, Copper (min) 15 ppm, Zinc (min) 45 ppm, Selenium (min) 0.30 ppm, and Vitamin A (min) 7,000 IU/lb. How much Wild Fed should I feed my horse?
Feeding rates are flexible. Use roughly 0.5 to 2 lbs per day for general use, 2 to 4 lbs per day for weight gain, or about 1.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight as a complete feed (with a max of 10 lbs per meal). It can also be offered as a treat at one cup, or two to four cups after exercise. Always adjust to your individual horse's condition and consult your vet for special cases.
How are the pellets made, and why does that matter?
The pellets are produced under high pressure that releases steam, creating a soft, lightly steamed, dehydrated product. Because of this process, no chemical binders are needed to hold the ingredients together. The result is a soft, steam-pelleted texture that is easy to chew and digest, which is especially helpful for senior horses with worn teeth.
Can Wild Fed be fed to senior horses that can no longer eat hay?
Yes, this is exactly the need that inspired the feed. The soft pellets soak readily into a mash and are easy to chew, making them ideal for horses with poor dentition who choke on hay. Founder Dr. Wellspring created the feed for her own senior horse Shadow when his worn teeth left him unable to hold weight on hay alone.
Where can I buy Wild Fed Horse Feed?
You can order online at wildfedhorse.com or buy from a growing network of local feed-store dealers. Does Wild Fed make products besides the feed?
Yes. Wild Fed also produces a line of organic herbal supplements, including Allergy Support, Blood Sugar Support, Breathe Freely, Chill Out Dude, Liver Cleanse, Joint Support #1 and #2, Stomach Soother, and Whoa Girl (hormone support for mares). They also offer herbal consultations with a custom-formulated herbal blend. These are formulated by a Naturopathic Doctor and herbalist.
Can Wild Fed be used as a complete feed or just a supplement?
It can serve both roles. As a complete feed it is fed at about 1.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight, while smaller amounts (0.5 to 2 lbs daily) work as a nutritional top-dress or ration balancer alongside forage. For performance horses it can be used as a foundation mixed with a preferred concentrate.
What healthy fats does Wild Fed contain?
The feed provides seed-based healthy fats from chia and sunflower seeds rather than from corn or soy oils. These whole seeds contribute omega fatty acids that support coat condition and energy. Crude fat is guaranteed at a minimum of 3.8%.
How do I contact Wild Fed Horse Feed?
You can call the company at 503-568-1882, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, or email [email protected]. Wild Fed is based in Durango, Colorado. The website also offers a contact form and a blog called the Wild Fed Journal, plus educational videos on the @wildfedhorse YouTube channel.
Why choose a whole-foods feed over a conventional senior or concentrate feed?
Wild Fed was designed because conventional senior feeds often contain ingredients like peanut hulls, synthetic nutrients, corn, soy, and added sweeteners. By building the feed from recognizable whole foods such as grasses, oats, seeds, and herbs, Wild Fed aims to nourish horses the way nature intended while avoiding common allergens and high sugar. This makes it a fit for metabolic, allergy-prone, and senior horses that struggle on processed feeds.
