The Solution Section (FAQ)
What are Kool Kurtains™ and how do they keep horses cooler?
Kool Kurtains™ are shade panels made from CS80 (Certified Shade 80), an exclusive textile that is scientifically tested and certified to deflect up to 80% of the sun's heat rays. They provide passive cooling and environmental screening for your equine facility while still permitting airflow, so your shelter or barn stays cooler in the heat of the day. The exact percentage of deflection varies with the angle of the sun.
Where can I use Kool Kurtains™ on my horse property?
Kool Kurtains™ are great for run-in sheds, barn aisles, stall doors, dutch doors, and arenas. They create a cooler, more bug-free and bird-free haven for your horses wherever you need shade or insect and bird screening. Custom orders can also fit horse trailers, dog shelters, barn windows, patios, and more.
What colors do Kool Kurtains™ come in, and do darker colors really repel more bugs?
The three standard colors are Black, Dark Bay (chocolate brown), and Natural Weave (light beige tweed), with custom colors available at an additional price in White, Hunter Green, Grey, and Beige. All colors offer the exact same cooling properties since all are certified CS80. The darker colors do help repel bugs a little better and let slightly less light in, so it appears a bit darker inside.
What sizes do Kool Kurtains™ panels come in?
Panels come standard at 35.5 inches wide and in standard lengths in 6-inch increments from 7.0 feet through 10.0 feet, with custom lengths available. Each panel has a 2-inch reinforced header with grommets at the top for easy installation. Panels should overlap each other by 4 to 6 inches and are usually attached to the inside header of the aisle or run-in.
How do I measure for Kool Kurtains™?
You only need to take two measurements: the height of the open space (how tall it is) and the length (how wide it is). If your run-in shed has a pole or post in the middle, measure each section separately so the post stays exposed and your horses don't run into it. Kool Kurtains™ should never touch the ground or cover a center post, and should hang 4 to 6 inches off the ground so your horse doesn't step on them.
Are Kool Kurtains™ easy to install, and can I leave them up in winter?
Yes, installation is easy: some customers hang them with large cup hooks, while others use heavy-duty staples, with the choice largely dictated by how much wind they'll encounter. You can absolutely leave them up year-round, even in colder climates. Many customers keep them on run-in sheds all winter because they help keep out rain and snow, preserve bedding, and provide protection from cold winter winds.
How much do Kool Kurtains™ cost?
Kool Kurtains™ cost $69 to $99 per panel, depending on how tall a panel you need, and each is 35.5 inches wide with a slight overlap. As an example, a 15-foot-wide opening that is 8 feet tall, with no pole in the middle, takes about 5 panels ordered at 7.5 feet tall (so the curtain hangs 4 to 6 inches off the ground).
How do I order Kool Kurtains™ or ask questions?
Just ask for Ellie, who is happy to help with your order, send color swatches, and answer any questions. You can connect through the website at https://www.koolkurtains.com to order or learn more. They'll help you figure out exactly how many panels and what length you need for your shelter, barn, or arena.
What are Kool Kurtains and what do they do?
Kool Kurtains™ are breathable shade panels that hang across barn aisles, stall doors, Dutch doors, windows, run-in sheds, and arena openings. They are scientifically tested to deflect up to 80% of the sun's heat rays while screening out bugs and birds, creating a cooler, healthier space for horses and people. They work passively, without electricity or insecticides, and still allow air to flow through.
Who makes Kool Kurtains?
Kool Kurtains are made by Certified Shade Technologies, LLC. Every panel is manufactured entirely in the USA and made to order rather than mass-produced from inventory.
What is CS80 fabric?
CS80 (Certified Shade 80) is the exclusive proprietary textile used in every Kool Kurtain. It has been scientifically tested and certified to deflect up to 80% of the sun's heat rays. The fabric is weather-resistant, fade-resistant, mold- and mildew-resistant, flame-retardant, and antimicrobial, yet permeable enough to let air move through.
What sizes do the panels come in?
Standard Panels are 35.5 inches wide and come in standard lengths from 7.0 feet through 10.0 feet in 6-inch increments. Each panel has a 2-inch reinforced header with grommets across the top for hanging. Standard Dutch Door curtains measure 48 inches by 56 inches.
What colors are available?
Stock colors are Black, Dark Bay (a chocolate brown), and Natural Weave (a light beige tweed). White, hunter green, grey, and beige can be special-ordered; contact Kool Kurtains for swatches and pricing.
Does the color affect how much heat is deflected?
No. The heat-deflection rate is exactly the same for every color you choose. The only difference is that darker colors allow slightly less light to pass through, so darker shades can work best in areas where you most want to discourage flying insects.
How do I install Kool Kurtains?
Panels are usually attached to the inside header of the aisle or run-in opening using the grommets along the reinforced top header. Adjacent panels should overlap each other by 4 to 6 inches so horses can pass through while the opening stays screened. Important: the curtains should never touch the ground and should never cover a center post or pole.
How do I measure for the right size?
You measure the opening you want to cover, then choose panels wide enough to overlap each other by 4 to 6 inches across that span and long enough to hang from the header without touching the ground. Panels come 35.5 inches wide in 6-inch length increments from 7 to 10 feet, so you combine panels to fit the doorway. The maker's How to Measure guide walks through it, or you can call for help sizing a custom opening.
Can I leave Kool Kurtains up in the winter?
Yes. Many customers leave Kool Kurtains up on run-in sheds year-round, even in colder climates. They report the curtains help keep out rain and snow, preserve bedding, and provide protection from cold winter winds.
Will Kool Kurtains keep flies and birds out of my barn?
Yes. The CS80 fabric screens out bugs and birds while still letting air flow. By keeping insects out, owners can reduce spending on fly sprays and insecticides and lower the health risks associated with mosquitoes and flies. Darker colors are especially effective at discouraging flying insects.
Can Kool Kurtains be customized for other uses?
Absolutely. Certified Shade Technologies can make Kool Kurtains for almost any application, including dog kennels, horse trailers, and residential and industrial uses. The product line already includes Panels, Dutch Door curtains, Window Covers, and Fido Screens for dog crates, and custom sizing is available on request.
Do Kool Kurtains work for animals other than horses?
The product was developed and proven for horses, and it has not been formally tested with many other farm animals or livestock. However, the maker says there is no reason to doubt it will be equally effective at screening heat and bugs for other animals, and the line already includes Fido Screens for dog crates.
What warranty comes with Kool Kurtains?
Under specified use and normal conditions, the CS80 fabric's ability to deflect up to 80% of the sun's heat rays is guaranteed for life. There is also a two-year limited manufacturing warranty, which is voided if the product is misused. Note that the actual percentage of deflection varies with the angle of the sun.
How long does it take to get my order?
Kool Kurtains are made to order and ship within six business days of the order, though most orders ship much sooner.
