Electric Fencing for Horses
Electric fence earns its place on a horse property for a reason most people only appreciate after they own one: it is the fence you can change. You can divide a pasture this month, move the division next month, rest a section of grass, open another, and adapt as the herd and the ground change — none of which a permanent fence will do for you.
For horses specifically, visibility is the thing to get right. A horse is a fast animal with a flight response, and a fence he can see is a fence he can respect before he ever meets it. That is why wide polytape has largely replaced bare wire for horse work, and why strand height and spacing are worth planning rather than guessing.
The other half of the job is the system: the energizer has to be sized to the fence you are actually running, the ground rods have to be adequate, and the gates and connectors have to match. Get those right and electric fence is one of the most useful tools on a horse property. Get them wrong and you will spend years wondering why it never quite works.
